"The first step towards wisdom is admitting you know nothing, and the last step is admitting that there is nothing to know."
Only fools will say they are intelligent and possess wisdom, the rest admit to knowing very little. So it's not contradictory at all if you think about it.
I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that last step, though. It sounds a lot like the Buddhist concept of Annatta (I think that's the principle I'm thinking of, at least), and that has always struck me as somewhat nihilistic. Of course, I'm certainly not enlightened ( -yet- *grin*) so...
... *gets lost in another confusing train of thought*
The "smart" people of the world, (academics for example, please note the ""'s) are too busy spouting philosophies and theories that don't really mean anything, and cannot be readily applied to our every day lives. This is sounding very "Tao of Pooh", anyhow. Your knowledge lies deeper than that. You are a very smart person anyhow... so please don't think yourself otherwise. Your words and helpful, beautiful, and deep in the most divine of ways.
Well that must be what makes you so smart! Socrates said something along the lines of "It is the wise man who knows nothing and knows he knows nothing."

I'm willing to admit my ignorance, but I'm certainly not over being irritated by it. *grin*
