I get distracted easily... but, Tamil is not similar to Hindi -- Hindi is an Indo-European language, while Tamil is a Dravidian language.
Which means that they have entirely different roots. So, as a native Hindi speaker I can vaguely understand languages such Gujarati, Punjabi, even Bengali, but not Dravidian languages.
Just as as a French speaker I can vaguely understand Spanish and Italian, though not entirely.
Anyhow, it would just be more convincing if you said the language was Gujarati or Bengali or something -- they all have different scripts than Hindi.

*headdesk* Thanks for pointing that out. I know next to nothing about Indian languages. In fact, and forgive me if this sounds ignorant, but I completely forgot which language Mohinder spoke, but I did remember it wasn't Hindi. I looked that up after I had written that scene.

The line was originally Chad asking if Mohinder was "writing in Indian," but then I smartened Chad's character up a bit. Maybe I should have left him dumb in that instance.

I will fix that scene.

Ha ha... I've lost track of the number of times I've been asked if I speak Indian by kids at school. And considering that my school is one of those "almost Ivies", I no longer know if that actually makes them dumb or just ignorant.

It makes them dumb. I once had a conversation with a girl who attends Princeton, and she did not understand the word "primative." It made me sad.

Sorry to be disparaging (eh, I'm actually quite enjoying the fic... I enjoy anything Chyan) but the whole "English is not even his first language" thing gets on my nerves. Big time. Because I have to deal with it all the time -- the point is, most people that grew up in urban India tend to grow up speaking two languages: English and whatever their native tongue is.

Ok... I'll try to just keep shut and enjoy the fic now -- I promise I'll put in a real comment at the end.

Again, I apologize. Very little is known about Mohinder's educational background other than what his doctoral work is in. So, I kinda made some of it up. I will change the line to "English isn't his only language."

Going back to the context of the story, personally I couldn't imagine writing in Hindi unless I wanted to clarify some pronunciations for French (Hindi is phonetic) -- it just doesn't come naturally to me, and I doubt it does to other kids that grew up in Delhi or Bombay.
But, then, I know nothing about this Mohinder Chandra character -- my mum grew up in a small town and for her writing in Hindi would be more natural than writing in English.

Like I said before, very little is known about Mohinder's past, so I made things up as I went. But that is very good information to store in the back of my mind for future use. I had him writing in Tamil was because I was currently tutoring an Iranian woman in English grammar (her fourth langauge). She thought in German (she spent a decade in Germany) but wrote in a combination of Farsi and English.
