Jun sighed exasperatedly as he walked into the super market he had been called to. He looked around nervously, his phone at his ear.
“Okay, where are you?” he asked in a hushed voice.
“I don’t know,” he heard a whining voice answering. “There’s a variety of like twenty curries in front of me.”
Jun sighed again as he hung up his phone. He looked around the aisles for a while and finally spotted a small figure sitting on the floor next to a huge freezer.
“Just what are you doing?” Jun asked as he approached his friend.
“I wanted to buy stuff for family dinner,” Nino explained. “My parents will be visiting for New Year so I wanted to, you know, treat them. The things that you do when your family visits. Cooking, making them feel at home… but it turns out I can’t even buy groceries.”
Jun chuckled, shaking his head. “You don’t even buy stuff for yourself regularly. How do you expect to cope with doing this for a family dinner?”
“I didn’t think it would be so… I didn’t think it would be like this,” Nino stated, sounding rather lost.
“Okay, I’ll help you,” Jun decided. “But for one, you will be paying for everything by yourself and for another, if you want to make your family feel at home, you’ll need a lot more than onions and chicken.”
“Such as?”
“How about a couch table?” Jun suggested.

“Oh god, this is going to be a nightmare,” Nino muttered. “I’ll need extra futons too.”
“Okay,” Jun sighed, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it just so happens that my sister moved recently and she and her boyfriend are giving away some of their furniture. We can check where they’re storing it at the moment and get some stuff.”
“Oh, you mean we can borrow stuff?” Nino perked up.
Jun gave him an annoyed look. “No, Nino,” he declared. “If you want stuff, you pay for it. That’s how things work. You will choose what you need and you will give my sister money for it.”
“Okay, okay,” Nino amended quickly. “Relax, mate. I’m glad that you want to help.”
Nino got back onto his feet again, brushing the dust from his pants before he shot Jun a thankful smile.
“Of course, I’m helping you,” Jun answered. “And since you’re a friend you’ll be given a discount,” he promised. “Now, what do you want to cook?”
“Curry Udon,” Nino answered readily.
Jun made a face. “Really? Fast food?”

“I’m not good at cooking, you know that,” Nino said, shrugging his shoulders.
“I think you should still go with something more traditional,” Jun advised. “How about Nabe? If you keep it simple, I’m sure you can cook that.”
“I don’t know,” Nino muttered.
“It’ll work out,” Jun promised. “Let’s get everything and we can try cooking it together.”
Nino blinked at Jun. “Really? You would?”
“Well, why not?” Jun shrugged. “It’s good to spend your days off with your friends, isn’t it?”
“But that’s not,” Nino tried to argue, but he got interrupted.
“Just say thank you already,” Jun urged.
A shy smile came to Nino’s face. “Thank you.”

“Okay,” Jun nodded. “We need mushrooms, a pumpkin, potatoes…”
“Potatoes?” Nino asked, sounding surprised.
“Trust me,” Jun winked at his friend, “they make the soup a bit thicker, giving it a rich taste.”
“Matsumoto, you flirt too much,” Nino complained.
Jun blinked in mock-surprise. “I’m what?”
“Oh, come on, don’t act like you don’t mean it,” Nino teased, nudging his elbow against Jun’s side playfully.
“Oh, and who’s flirting right back, huh? So don’t you act like you don’t like it,” Jun countered.
“But if I do anything,” Nino said in a hushed voice, “Sho-kun will rip my head right off.”

Jun laughed at that. “Don’t pretend you’d go there if it wasn’t for Sho. You never once tried a single thing.”
“Well, we can’t all go snogging in public,” Nino pointed out.
“It wasn’t in public,” Jun argued. “And it was just that one time.”
“In front of Juniors is in public,” Nino retorted, “and it’s not the first time you got close to Aiba.”
“Awwww,” Jun crooned, a smirk coming to his face, “is it that you want me to kiss you only?”
“Stop babbling nonsense,” Nino demanded, even as a blush spread on his cheeks, “and find those mushrooms. I’ll get booze.”

“No, really, Ninomiya-kun,” Jun’s sister insisted. “You’re family just as much as Jun is, so I’m not taking your money. Please, take what you need, I’m glad to get rid of some of this stuff.”
“With that difference that you’d absolutely take money from me,” Jun grumbled. Just why did his sister have to act like that? He had made a point when he had talked to Nino earlier, after all.
“Now, now, don’t be a sourpuss,” Jun’s sister scolded him. “He’s your friend, you should be happy.”
“I’ll be happy the day Nino pays dinner when we go out,” Jun pointed out.
“I will,” Nino promised. When Jun gave him skeptical look, he just nodded his head firmly. “Really. Next time, let’s have dinner together and it’ll be on me.”
“I’ll call you on that,” Jun promised. “Well, then, grab what you need.” When Nino gave him an expectant look Jun sighed deeply, but took a look around the available items. “That carpet will do,” he decided, pointing at the item. “Then the table over there, the small one there too and that open cupboard.”
Nino quickly placed everything neatly together.
Jun nodded. “I think that will do,” he mused. “Now you just need some kitchen attire and we’ll be good.”
“Way ahead of you,” Jun’s mother declared as she met them.
She was holding a huge box with pots, pans and Jun even spotted tablecloths and fancy napkins next to a spatula and a cooking spoon.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Jun gasped.
“What, you’re gonna need these things, aren’t you?”
Jun laughed nervously at that. “I guess. Thanks,” he muttered as he accepted the box.
“I’m really thankful,” Nino said, a huge smile on his face. He bowed deeply.
“Thanks, mom,” Jun added, nodding his head, unable to do anything else with the huge box in his hands. “Now, let’s get everything to your apartment quickly,” he then addressed Nino. “We still need to get some cooking done, after all.”

Two car drives (because Jun’s car was too small to hold everything in one go) and about two hours later, Jun and Nino were standing in the latter’s living room, inspecting their handiwork.
“Nice,” Jun decided. “It looks quite homely.”
“It does look good,” Nino agreed.
They had arranged the new furniture neatly around the room, so it didn’t look completely empty, while still leaving Nino the space he was used to. Much to Jun’s surprise the older man had found a liking to the little cupboard they had placed against the wall at the back of the room, in which he could file his games and DVDs.
“About extra futons,” Jun muttered, “I can lend you one.”
“Thanks a lot,” Nino beamed at him. “But I’ll be good sleeping on the sofa. But what’s with the attitude? You said I should buy stuff if I wanted it.”
“Yeah, well,” Jun grinned at him, “after today I’m thinking, maybe you’re not as tightfisted as I thought, maybe you’re just the kind of guy people will happily give whatever he might be needing.”

“You sound like I should say thanks now,” Nino mused, “but the words kind of sting.”
“Maybe it’s a skill that you have,” Jun joked. “No need money, or something like that.”
“Well, I know that cooking isn’t one of my skills,” Nino declared.
“Nah,” Jun waved him off. “We’ll prepare something that you can easily reproduce for your family. You’ll see, it’s not a big deal. If you make a few notes, you’ll be fine.”
“Alright, let’s give it a try, then,” Nino decided.
He pulled up the box with the pots and pans and started rummaging around in it. Jun helped him and just a few minutes later they were standing in the kitchen, cutting vegetables.
“I totally don’t know how you do that,” Nino said as he watched Jun cutting onions.
Jun blinked at him. “What do you mean?”

“Well, for one, I’m almost crying over here from the smell of those onions - as for another, you cut them so neatly. When I do that they end up in the frying pan as big chunks.”
Jun chuckled at that. “Well, if you can’t cut them up, get a cutter. They cut the things for you and they have a lid too, so you won’t start crying over onions and stuff.”
“Oh, that’s a good idea,” Nino agreed. “I’ll get one tomorrow. So I won’t be lost without you helping me out.”
“I told you, you’ll be doing fine. Are you done with the mushrooms?”
Nino nodded proudly and presented the mushrooms he had prepared. They were perfectly clean, the stems removed and the shape of the character “Arashi” had been carved into the head of the mushrooms.
Jun laughed. “Wow, that looks pretty good.”
“You think?” Nino asked happily.

His eyes were sparkling and Jun thought he looked just too cute when he thought he achieved something important.
“Yeah, they look neat,” Jun confirmed. “You can get right to the potatoes,” he continued, pointing at the items in question. “Wash, peel, cut,” he instructed.
“Okay,” Nino chirped and with that quickly jumped to the sink to get to work.
Jun smiled as Nino started to hum “Wish” to himself and after a moment he started to mumble the lyrics silently. Their eyes met and they grinned at each other as they started singing together. At some point Nino messed up the lyrics and they just laughed as he continued with “la-la-la”. Jun felt happy. Even though he’d spent the bigger part of his day off working, he thought it was fun. They finished their cooking preparations, Nino took a few notes about some things of which he feared that he might not remember them, like how long the potatoes were supposed to cook before you added other vegetables. When everything was ready they set up the cooking pot.
“It’s good that you have at least something like that,” Jun teased as he fumbled with the gas can.
Nino smiled. “My mother gave it to me,” he explained. “When I moved out of my parents' house, she handed it to me. She said she hoped that I could often have a lot of friends over and eat with them.”

Jun smiled. “That’s nice.”
“She thought I was being weird,” Nino said. “You know, I’ve always been kind of… well, I didn’t meet with friends a lot, not even in school. I enjoyed spending time just by myself, watching TV, reading, playing games. I wasn’t a very social kid.”
Jun nodded thoughtfully. “But then… didn’t she accept that you’re not an outgoing type, giving you this, so you can have fun with your friends here, where you like spending your time?”
Nino blinked at him. Then he nodded and there was that sparkling in his eyes again. “Probably.”
“So, why do you never invite us over?” Jun asked as he seated himself on the floor right in front of the small table.
“You’re here,” Nino argued.
“Yeah,” Jun laughed, “for the first time in years.”
“I just… I can’t seat people here,” Nino shrugged. “And you, or also Sho-kun, you have your apartments set up so neatly. So, I keep thinking that it’s better to meet at your places.”
“I see,” Jun nodded, as he stirred the water in the pot. “But now you can seat people here too.”
“I guess,” Nino smiled.

“Okay, the water’s already starting to heat up,” Jun analyzed. “Put the potatoes in now.”
Nino nodded and added the potato pieces. He wasn’t exactly being too careful, so some of the water splashed out onto the table.
“Careful,” Jun advised him. “You want the soup in your put, not on your table.”
“Right.”
“You know, you can add the spring onions too already,” Jun mused. “They’ll give the broth some good taste.”
“You do know a lot about cooking,” Nino mused as he did what Jun instructed. “You know, I don’t think I say thank you enough when you watch out that I eat well.”
Jun laughed at that. “Well, I can’t let you go on fast food alone. Plus, you hardly ever think about eating enough in general.”
“Well, you don’t have to,” Nino shrugged. “But I’m grateful that you watch out for me like that. You keep watching out for all of us, actually.”

“I love you,” Jun smiled. “So I want to make sure you guys have everything that you need.”
Nino nodded as he smiled back, but he seemed a bit wary all of a sudden. Jun mused that he was probably not happy with the fact that he had let Jun too deep into his thoughts and feelings. There was nothing wrong with that, though. Even so, Jun decided it would be better to leave Nino his space. He went back to giving instructions about the cooking and about thirty minutes later the stew looked quite delicious.
“Congratulations,” Jun chirped happily. “You successfully cooked a good-looking pot of Nabe.”
“It does look pretty good,” Nino agreed.
He looked as pleased as surprised, which, in combination, was just downright cute.
“Well, let’s eat, then,” Jun decided. “I get dishes, you serve.”
“Okay,” Nino laughed nervously. “But I’m not sure I can do that well.”
“That’s why you’re practicing, stupid,” Jun teased with a grin.
He quickly got bowls, spoons and serving attire.
“Well, there you go,” he said expectantly as he handed everything to the other.

Nino nodded firmly and prepared the two bowls. Then he carefully poured some of the broth in them. He spilt a little bit, but that didn’t really matter. He filled them quite evenly, which was good, and then carefully added about two pieces of each ingredient they had put in. Jun found that Nino did really well, he even placed everything so neatly you could see everything you were eating. Once he was done he placed one of the bowls in front of Jun, looking at him warily as he chewed on his lip nervously.
So cute.
“Well?” Nino asked. “What do you think?”
“We haven’t tasted it yet, have we?” Jun mused. “But it looks just about perfect.”
Nino beamed. “Really? Did I do it well?”
Jun nodded. “You do everything carefully. It gives your guest the feeling that you want them to enjoy eating. That’s a nice feeling.”

“That really makes me happy,” Nino said cheerfully. “Now I think I can host my parents.”
“Absolutely,” Jun agreed. “But first we eat.”
“I hope you like it. Itadakimasu.”
“Itadakimasu.”
They started eating and Jun found that it tasted absolutely wonderful. Their bowls got three re-fills each and sometime into it they got themselves beer as well. After working together all day they enjoyed a relaxing evening together, eating chatting and gaming - they were at Nino’s place, after all. They were sitting on Nino’s couch, the game running on the huge flat screen and their beer cans on the new table in front of them. And Jun actually found he liked the game Nino had picked out a lot - because Nino had picked it due to the fact that he wasn’t good at it, but Jun turned out rather capable, so he kept winning.
“You have to teach me how you do that too sometime,” Nino joked.
“It’s all in the wrist,” Jun teased. “Might be I practice this more than you do.”
Nino blinked. “Huh?”

Jun chuckled. Oh dear, they’d had some alcohol apparently.
“You know, when two guys really like each other, sometimes they’ll do things for each other that involve that kind of wrist turning,” Jun explained with a grin.
Then he laughed, because Nino blushed furiously. When he took another sip from his beer he almost choked, though.
“Do you think I’d get better, if I tried that?” Nino asked, his face looking absolutely serious.
“Nino, that’s not a very good reason for jerking someone off,” Jun told him.
“Can’t I practice on myself?” Nino asked, sounding a bit wary.
“It’s not the same,” Jun explained.
“I see,” Nino nodded. “Well, then… I’ll only play this one with you, because you can only do it well because of that.”
“I never said it’s that,” Jun laughed. “I was just joking.”
“It must be like that, though,” Nino decided.

“Ah,” Jun made, nodding his head. “Well, who knows? But this game’s a lot of fun.”
“It’s fun to play with friends,” Nino told him. “I don’t get to do that a lot.”
“Well, just call me over when you feel like it,” Jun offered. “If you cook for me and treat me on beer, I’ll happily provide you company.”
“Does that count for the meal I’m supposed to pay for?” Nino teased.
“If it’s fancy,” Jun shrugged, “why not?”
“Jun,” Nino addressed him, putting his controller on the table as he turned to look at him.
“Hm?” Jun blinked at him as he mimicked the gesture.
“Thank you, really,” Nino said. “For helping me like this today.”
Jun smiled at him. “Nah, any time.”

He found Nino’s eyes getting glittery again. It looked so cute, Jun wanted to hug him… When Jun finally realized what was going on inside of him, he froze. He was falling for Nino. But that could not happen. For many reasons. They were colleagues. Jun had had an affair with a common friend. Straight guys always only meant trouble.
“Jun, I…” Nino muttered nervously. He shifted around uncomfortably, but did not break their gaze. “Can you do one more thing for me?”
“What is it?” Jun asked. His voice was even, his body completely rigid. There was something in those eyes that…
Jun gasped as he suddenly found a pair of thin lips against his. Nino had moved quickly and without any further warning, which resulted in them kissing rather awkwardly. It wasn’t even a real kiss. Just lips pressed together. Then, just as quickly as Nino had initiated the encounter, he pulled back again.
“Sorry,” he muttered. “I shouldn’t have…”
“Why did you?” Jun asked, sounding a bit breathless.
“Well, I…” Nino bit his lip. “I don’t know. Is it weird to say that you… look dashingly beautiful?”
Jun blinked at the other. “I’m in cooking clothes. My hair’s damp. My face must look sweaty.”

Nino merely shook his head. Then he pecked Jun’s lips again. Once. Twice. Jun didn’t quite know what to do with all of that, then lips were pressed against his again firmly. He closed his eyes for a second as he felt a hand slipping around his waist. Then he pulled back. He inspected Nino carefully for a moment. Then he smiled genuinely.
“If you go like that you’ll never seduce anyone,” he analyzed. “I’ll teach you something else that’s very useful.”
And then, before he could ruin anything with thinking too much, it was Jun who initiated a kiss, his lips softly nipping at Nino’s, inviting him to join the fun. After some more probing a slow kiss established. Jun’s eyes closed again and his head tilted almost naturally to allow a better angle. He was happy to find the lips against him getting more daring. They were playing with his pair, opening just a bit and letting him feel the tip of a tongue. Jun hummed his approval and mimicked the movements. The hand around his waist slipped down over his hip and to his ass and that’s when Jun completely lost all conscious awareness of what was happening around him and what he was doing. When next he could grasp a thought he found he was lying on Nino’s couch entangled with the other, they were kissing heatedly, their bodies snuggled together and there was a hand under his shirt, stroking his back, up and down, fingers tickling his small.

Jun gasped, pulling back a bit. He kept his eyes closed, his face close to Nino’s, enjoying the closeness. His nose rubbed Nino’s playfully and he found the other played along happily. They nuzzled each other’s faces for a while, even venturing to sensitive ears and jaw lines, but always keeping the rather playful mood they were in. When Nino kept nudging Jun’s cheek, the latter started to chuckle.
“Mh, this is nice,” Jun decided.
“Absolutely,” Nino agreed.
“That came quite as a surprise, though,” Jun teased, his fingers stroking Nino’s neck lazily.
“Really?” Nino chuckled.
“Well, you never did anything like that,” Jun reminded him.
“Guess I was worried that if I tried kissing you I’d never want to stop again,” Nino admitted, blushing.
Jun chuckled lightly, pulling Nino closer to his form. “You’re just… the cutest thing ever.”
Nino blinked at him. “Ah… really?”
“Absolutely,” Jun confirmed. “All day long as I was watching you, I couldn’t stop thinking how cute you are.”

Nino smiled happily. “And… what are we gonna do now?”
“Well,” Jun mused, “I guess it depends. If you deem me worth Sho’s wrath and Oh-chan’s teasing, we can see where this might go. If it’s too much aggravation, we can just say we were drunk and out for some fun.”
“We are drunk,” Nino analyzed.
“And are you out for fun?” Jun asked teasingly.
He felt Nino going rigid in his arms and regretted getting too bold too soon.
“Do you just want to lay me?” Nino asked. He sounded hurt and Jun felt his chest tightening.
“No,” he burst out immediately. He stroked Nino’s back soothingly, trying to get the comfortable air between them back. “Of course, not,” he assured. “I was trying to be funny, but sometimes I try too hard, I guess. Which isn’t saying that I don’t find you sexually attractive. I’d totally do it with you. I mean… Well, if you want to… Oh, but I don’t mean now. I mean…”
Nino chuckled and gave Jun a chaste kiss to his lips to stop his babbling.
“You know, you’re cute too,” Nino grinned. “And Sho can chew my ear off with his complaints, I won’t mind. As for Oh-chan, I know it’s just because he’s jealous. It’s all fine for me.”
“Well, then,” Jun concluded as he initiated a new soft kiss, “I guess we can just take it slow and simply enjoy this for now.”

Nino kissed him back readily. They enjoyed each other for a while, no urgency or insecurity between them anymore. After a while, though, Nino pulled back. He smiled at Jun.
“I still want another round of that game,” he told Jun.
Jun chuckled at that. “Happily. Do I get another beer too?”
“Coming right up,” Nino announced as he got up.
For a second Jun found he’d made a mistake, because he missed the feeling of Nino’s body against his. But then he heard Nino calling from the kitchen.
“And then we get to the next round.”
Jun grinned to himself. Definitely one of his best days off ever.
