Names, names, names

Broke the news about the new impending cousin to Sadie-niece yesterday. She was a bit nonplussed at first. Later she asked me who I would be marrying. I explained that wasn't going to happen. By the end of the day she was suggesting baby names (all of her friends at school ( Read more... )

It's difficult, I know. However, it's your right to name your child whatever you want. Yes, it's great to have input from family members, but in the end, it's not their choice. We didn't discuss this with our family or friends for either of our boys. We just told them after they were born. :) My Dad was especially proud that we used his name as our younger son's second name. He had no idea.

Good luck!

Thanks Maewyn! I was reluctant to tell anyone but I wanted time for them to hopefully get used to the name/s, rather than have a negative reaction later. The argument with my sister on the middle name was a case in point. :D

Congrats, sweetie! Can't believe I missed the big announcement. I hope you're having an easy time of it. And pick the name that pleases you!

((((Hewene)))) Thank you! Yes, I've been lucky to have a cruisy pregnancy so far. Hee, I should really make an announcement on Facebook, I'm nearly six months and I still haven't done it. :D

I sympathise -you should be able to pick the name that you want although as a teacher I'd say think about whatever name you choose in relation to how it goes with your surname and isn't too crazy. Kids hate crazy names. Others laugh at the name and the child concerned is forever explaining ( ... )

Oh yes, I don't want a crazy name! You get some interesting ones around here. I know of an Eowyn, a Strider, a McKellar (girl) and a Sledgehammer! Mind you, Heath Ledger was named after Heathcliff. :) And I went to school with a Brian who changed his name from Byron. I don't blame him. And Gandalf, seriously, who'd do that to a kid?

I think the names I've chosen are pretty, without being too 'out there', but Mum says name 1 is 'too strong' and would be shortened to a boy's name, and a cousin doesn't like it being the same as a Disney character. No, it's not Cinderella or Rapunzel! But sheesh. It's not like Tequila or Mugwump. Name 2 is Cornish and I have only seen it in one novel (said character is a bit of a cow, but so is Scarlett O'Hara and look how many Scarletts there are.)

Thanks for your kind thoughts xxx.

Girls can be strong too - my sister being the perfect example. :) If you really like it best, go with it - your Mum will get used to it, I'm sure!

Of course they can! :) And if Mum doesn't like it she can give her a nickname of her own.

My sister refused to talk to anyone in the family about name choices before the day of the birth(s) of both my nieces. It might have been a good thing since she didn't want to deal with what you're talking about, people saying they didn't like a name or veto-ing names, etc. As it was on the second niece, she and her husband couldn't even agree and they were still trying to decide on the way to the hospital! ;) I say pick a name YOU love and stick by your guns.

Thanks Claudia! Yeah, I wanted to resist that, it's near impossible to pick a name everyone is all right with. Even the simplest seem to annoy someone or other. Sis wanted to call her second child London and ended up with Alice, only to say now that she thinks Frankie would suit her personality better!

We didn't consult with anyone, just presented them with the final name choice. Well, we did a poll on Facebook, but that was very much tongue in cheek (Storminator Stormageddon, and similarly crazy choices), with the real name slipped in there. :P

Storminator! :D My sister suggested IVF for the middle name. Har har. We ended up trading some very silly names!
