And YES, Grapes of Wrath was such a good book to do a paper on! But I enjoyed reading it actually. I cried a few times, and a book that can make me cry (not to mention how much it made me think!) is automatically on my read-again list.
The ones I'd urge you to give a try:
Memoirs of a Geisha (One of my favorites, hands down. But the writing is a little different from that of usual Western novels, less action-oriented, more whimsical and descriptive. I cried.)
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (A very unusual book, a mystery novel written from the perspective of an autistic teenage boy. It's FANTASTIC and hilarious and sharp. And bizarrely enough, I cried here too. It makes the reader feel.)

I liked Northanger- it's probably the easiest of hers to read.
Oo, I'm glad you like Lolita. I've been dying to read it, and then of course I want to listen to Jeremy Iron's audia tape, and then see his movie. Ha ha.
I like the title of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and the Bros. intrigues me.
However, I have to stop reading light chick lit and force myself to read 'proper' books. Ha ha. And then of course there's all the fanfic calling my name this summer... *sigh*

What's a little intimidating is how much MORE fanfiction there is in the HP fandom all of a sudden, post-DH. Especially fanfiction involving Snape, and even more specifically, Snape and Lily. It does sometimes scare me enough that I turn to the books lining my bookshelf, but it doesn't happen as often as I'd wish either.
