I don't usually shop in major supermarkets, so this might not actually be new, but it was new to me :P In Woolies today I found a Devondale Organic tasty cheese, that uses non-animal rennet (and actually says so on the package)! I've been trying to find a decent brand of vegetarian cheese for ages, and although Mainland supposedly has one, I've ( Read more... )

Coles (the one near me, anyway) does the Mainland one and it looks more or less like this. I love that Devondale one though :) The Woolworths brand of cheese is also rennet-free and surprisingly good!

As for parmesan, I'm hoping somebody else can answer that :p

That's one of the downsides to rejecting the hold the major supermarkets have on our society - only a limited range of stuff is stocked in small independant supermarkets :/

I could stretch myself to buying cheese at woolies or coles though, I don't think that would put too much pressure on my social conscience. I've never seen the words 'vegetarian' splashed across cheese though, and I think I would have noticed if it was that big, how odd. Will have to look out for it.

Definitely. I have the same moral dilemma and for ages avoided the big supermarkets like the plague. But then I reasoned that the actual products you purchase have a big impact too - if you support certain products they edge their way into the mainstream and also become easier for other people to buy. So I don't feel too guilty about going to coles for the good-quality vego/vegan products.

There is a cheese I've bought in the past that does have a big label saying vegetarian on the front of it, I can't remember the brand but I bought it from Safeway and Coles.

I found a rennet-free Parmesan/Mozzarella blend once in Western Australia. It would have been at Coles or Woolies I think. I bought it again recently but can't remember the name of it. Something with 'Italian' or 'Italiano' in the name I think :)

There exists vegan parmesan cheese!1!

I don't know exactly where to get it, but the guy from Melbourne who supplies Sydney with Cheezly vegan cheese also deals with it. It doesn't taste that different - though it's been far too many years for me to give an accurate review.
