Nosework

We've been having fun learning NW and have been to a few trials now. It is a really fun sport and there is more to it then I realized! I like it as much as tracking, maybe more!   I have taken a few classes in Eugene, but now take classes online. Many of the NW instructors and judges are real life detection dog trainers and handlers - so it makes ( Read more... )

I'm so glad you're enjoying this! I love it too. I love watching, it just blows me away what those dogs and their handlers can do! Razor and I could never quite get our signals straight. Which was a bummer because I think he could have been very good at it.

Cole didn't start until he was 10! I wanted something for him to do after his back injury. He still has a great nose. I love the online classes thru Fenzi Academy. I learned all about training alerts and rewarding at source of odor. Maybe this would help with you understanding each other? :-) Just a thought... All my dogs LOVE this sport!!

that's the class we took. I think the method is really sound. Just Raze and I couldn't come to an agreement. :)

It's great that you are enjoying nosework. It's interesting that you like it more than tracking -- I was wondering how I would enjoy nosework but haven't gotten around to actually trying it. But it would be more convenient to train, logistically, since it can be done just about anywhere.

It looks like Jeb certainly enjoys it!

For some reason I thought it would be dorky.. It is really interesting and fun. Different then tracking...and, yes, much easier to find places to work! I really like the online classes thru the Fenzi Academy - the instructors are great. Esp the ones who train detection dogs "for real!"

All three of my dogs love it!

I really should get off my lazy ass and do this with Merc, I think he would love it. Funny, I think of it as dorky too so I'm glad to read your impression, and about the online class.

I have always done tracking and for some reason I thought this sounded dorky. But there is really a lot to it and it is so fun to train! It's really interesting to learn new info about scent. There are some excellent instructors at the Fenzi Academy -Lucy Newton has been my fav so far. I far prefer the online classes to local classes. It is just a different level of instruction. :-)

At the last trial I was at, both judges worked in law enforcement and had or were working detection dogs. Interesting. :-)
