<.< Mac/Lenore Journal Thread :: Jan 23

Mac had left the office early for the first time in, well, ever. The invitation from Lenore hadn't been entirely suprising considering their discussion last night and he had to admit her claims at her cooking skills had piqued his curiosity. Not to mention that it hadn't been a great day, to say the least, and it had been awhile since Mac had let ( Read more... )

Today was not the best of days. Lenore looked up quickly when she heard the knock, a little afraid to believe Mac had actually taken her up on it. Leaving him her address was rather forward, or maybe just more direct than her usual approach. She hadn't even had the heart to make it truly challenging for him because...she just wanted someone around today ( ... )

"Apparently so," he replied, stepping through the door and giving the room a quick appraisal. It looked just as he might have pictured - decorations that were pure Lenore - and he couldn't help smiling.

"This is for you. Or possibly for us," he told her, holding out the bottle to her.

He was oblivious to her mood, more or less. She masked it well and he wasn't really trying to read her at the moment anyway. He had been lad for an excuse to shove off early and he was looking forward to seeing what she had in store.

She grinned at the alcohol. Mac did know how to brighten her day. "Why thank you," Lenore said, taking the bottle from him and closing the door. "Not feeling as though you need a few drinks to be comfortable around me are you ( ... )

Well, of course that wasn't it at all, and Mac laughed a little at the suggestion of it. "Quite the contrary, I assure you," he told her with a grin. "I just didn't want to shwo up empty-handed and I know few people who would appreciate it quite as much as who."

Muggle liquor, after all, wasn't appreciated quite so well by most wizards, so many of his associates would have just turned up their noses and declared it not so delightful as firewhiskey or any other number of wizarding drinks. Lenore, he knew, had retained an apppreciation for such things just as he had. Not to mention.. it was alcohol.

He nearly frowned as she mentioned not being sure he would show. Sure, he kept people intentionally at a distant, but that statement bothered him more than he would have liked. He pushed the thought away and smiled at her.

"A drink should start things off nicely," he agreed. "And I do believe you owe me a tour. It's only fair.."

Lenore's eyes slid closed and a relieved smile spread over her face as she let out a breath she hadn't been aware of holding. Thank you. It was stupid, but she felt much better hearing him say that. Tomorrow would be a better day. This would be gone by then. In the meanwhile she had Mac around to keep the ground firmly planted beneath her.

She opened her eyes and gave him a weak but unforced smile. "Sounds like a deal."

Finding herself able to function normally once more, Lenore got up and collected the dishes, carrying some and levitating the rest as she brought them into the kitchen to be taken care of.

Mac decided to help her with the dishes. Which wasn't an excuse to follow Lenore into her kitchen. No, not in the least.

He was worried about her, to be truthful. He didn't doubt she'd get through this mood - whatever it was - but he wasn't used to seeing her so seemingly vulnerable and he decided he didn't much like it.

Especially when it only made him want to protect her from whatever demons were hovering about.

Lenore realized Mac had followed her into the kitchen and she smiled over her shoulder at him. The fact that he was staying close was appreciated. "You clean too. Nice." A flick of her wand wrapped up the leftovers and set the dishes to starting themselves. "How is it no one snatched you up with all these hidden skills of yours?"

Lenore wasn't sure if she was teasing or being honestly curious now and moved to the fridge to put things away. Probably teasing. She knew why she didn't have anyone at home; Lenore was happy that way. She loathed trying to bend to please people. Was ruddy awful at it, actually, because she never could manage to think they deserved to be happy more than she did. Ah, well. No regrets here.

It wasn't as though no one had tried to snatc Mac up. He'd definitely had his share of women chasing after him over the years. It was just that Mac didn't let anyone get close to him. He'd never been snatched up because he didn't wish to be. Because attacments were messy and complicated and what had happened wit Cal's wife was only proof that it led to no good.

"Oh, I like to keep them all for myself," he quipped with a smirk that might ave been a little forced. Her mood seemed to be contagious and he very nearly found himself answering her question truthfully. Good job he stoppe dhimself from that in time. She certainly didn't invite him over to watch him brood.
