Trek Movie..

Very strange.

I am wistful about the new film, which I saw yesterday. Yet despite being disappointed, I am oddly resigned, even cheerful about the fact that Star Trek has moved on and left Gene Roddenberry's good (though flawed) vision behind. In my opinion --which seems not to be shared by anyone I know O.o -- they've created something new, not ( Read more... )

I think you put it very succinctly. I haven't seen it yet, mostly because I don't have time but also in turn that I know what is in the movie/spoilers and I just have no real interest in seeing it. One of my coworkers who is an old school trekkie mostly from the 90s haydays is a fan very much on par with how I am and she said basically what you did: It was a good film in the aspect of wambam action stuff but it wasn't "Trek". Disappointed is the best way to describe it. I didn't even try putting my expectations high and I'm still disappointed, you know I was mostly against it from the beginning even though I softened some of my stances. :(

BTW - you aren't the only one on the Uhura uselessness in the movie. A number of people in the startrek community who have written reviews have complained about that.

Oh also, since you love Khan so much I thought I would warn you, there are rumors the next movie with this new!crew will be around that storyline.

AAaagh.

I grabbed a 3-set DVD of Star Trek II, III and IV in Target yesterday just to remind myself what old trek was, and goodness, I STILL love II so very much, because of Montalbahn chewing up the scenery. That was such an incredibly campy film.

I'm so relieved to hear you say this. I remember at one point you had softened, and I figured I'd just somehow missed your own review of the film...and that you'd be upset at my own criticism.

Nah, if I had loved it I probably would still be talking about it. :D I'm just really kind of meh about it. It seems also to be a common thing among some fans that are like us. I'll definitely do a review once I finally watch it, maybe I'll drag hubby this weekend (that's why I haven't seen it, he wanted me to see it with him) if it is still in a theatre here. I've gotten so much flak IRL and online for being the QUEEN OF TREK! and not having seen the film ( ... )

The Plaza (which I have abandoned again, aie) had the same problem with the LOTR films at times. The huge team of moderators was needed to keep the peace between the "Jackson has destroyed Tolkien's vision" and "Portions of it were excellent" and "OMG the films are GODLIKE" faction.
We managed to strike a balance, because the moderators and admins were committed to allowing a place for ALL fans to share THEIR particular part of the fandom -- so the Tolkien Purists were sometimes banned from the Movie Forums to keep the peace, and vice versa. But not from the whole site. And the goal was to let everybody enjoy their piece of Middle-earth (except, alas, p0rn), so that it could be a meeting place for all fans, young and old.

Very, very hard to pull off.
