When he offered a penny for her thoughts

Characters: Tracey Davis and Greg Goyle
Rating: PG
Summary: Contemplating just what she feels for her best friend, Tracey goes for a run.

Because of the lingering snow outside and because Greg was in Belfast for the day settling some paperwork for Sláinte, Tracey decided to take her morning run in the gym at Stone Walk rather than on the island. She'd worked up quite a sweat and had ran for a lot longer than she'd planned but her mind had been going over all the changes developing in her life and she'd completely lost track of time.

First it was Asteria. She hadn't ever considered being friends with a Greengrass but she'd honestly enjoyed her visits with the other witch and hoped that the feeling was mutual. She seemed more comfortable now and was even becoming quite the little pool player. Tracey couldn't keep the grin off her face imagining how fun it would be to challenge the boys next time they all got together.

Which led to the other thing pressing on her mind. Asteria had never had anyone take an interest in her like the three Slytherins had and the younger witch had brought several things to Tracey's attention that no matter how much she tried she couldn't keep out of her head.

She'd always known what she and Val had was special. Draco had said how strange they were often enough but they'd never listened to him. His jibes were usually so laced with subtle envy that Tracey had felt guilty for flaunting what she and Greg felt in front of their friend, but when it all boiled down to it - what was it that she and Greg were to each other?

Tracey was pretty sure what she felt, but she worried that dissecting it and giving it a name would only bring heartbreak if he didn't feel the same way she did. It was like walking a thin line - desperate for more but also afraid of what more entailed. Afraid that change would ruin what had taken a lifetime to perfect.

It was thoughts like this that filled her mind when the handsome wizard in question sauntered into the gymnasium where she was running laps.

Greg just grinned at the sight of his Maeve, sweaty curls sticking to her forehead, wearing one of his shirts and a pair of very short shorts. "Looks like I missed all the fun, Maeve. Will you take a swim with me or are you worn out?"

Tracey slowed to a stop beside him and bent at the waist, resting her hands on her knees as she caught her breath. Wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand, she gave him a bright smile. "I may be no good doing laps or anything but I'm more than happy to sit in the hot tub and watch you."

"Want me to get you a drink before I change?" he asked, holding a hand out for her. Everyday Greg thanked whatever gods were responsible for him coming home to Maeve. He didn't know what he would do without her.

"I'll grab one when I get into my bathing suit," she said, taking his hand and standing on tip toes to kiss the cheek of the boy she loved best. "How was work? All done or do you have to go back later?"

"I'm yours the rest of the day," he said, tugging her gently against his side. "Whatever will you do with me?"

Tracey grinned and leaned into him. "You're mine all the time, silly," she said happily. "Even when I'm getting icky sweat all over you."

Greg just couldn't resist. "Aww, love, I'm just grumpy that I missed seeing you get all sweaty."

Rolling her eyes, Tracey elbowed him gently. "I'm sure, Val. You'd be dripping wet beside me because I'd've made you run with me. I miss summer when we could run all over the island."

"So true, and if you miss warm weather we can go away for a bit if you'd like."

"There you go again. Offering to turn the world upside down just for me," Tracey said with a wide grin. "You really shouldn't be so wonderful to me you know."

"It's not turning it upside down, love, " he said wryly. "I like being wonderful to you, so I think you'll have to get used to it."

"If you insist," she said with a wink before letting go of him to find the new bikini she'd brought from Whittom after Greg's birthday and then just shoved into the drawers of her wardrobe. "Do you want to change up here or should I?"

Greg just rested his hip on the dresser watching her dig through the drawers. Part of his mind wished he could help her undress, touching and tasting her like he wanted to and the more practical part of his mind reminded him that Maeve was his best friend and that she just wouldn't appreciate his advances. Shaking his head, he pushed off and went in search of his suit. "I'll change down there, Maeve."

Tracey nodded slowly, hiding her frown but feeling emptier as he left the room. She fastened the strings on her bikini faster than she'd ever thought possible so she could seek out his comfort and light once more.
