Spanakopita

Has anyone been watching Jamie's Ministry of Food? I don't know how old it is - these things take a while to reach us in Canada - but it's well worth watching. Certainly makes me aware that Adam's cousin's boyfriend-from-Wales was far from alone in never having eaten a vegetable before! It's darn scary, as bad as Jamie's School DinnersAnyway, he's ( Read more... )

That looks SO good! I've printed it out and I'll definitely have to try it sometime soon - especially since we have a bunch of fresh spinach in the garden. :)

Lucky you! We're growing spinach for the first time this year but so far it hasn't made much progress so I'm not sure if it'll work.

I think that Jamie show has been on here, but at some obscure time slot on a commercial channel. I have read about it though and think it's fantastic.

I love Spanakopita but have never been arsed making it. I really should though, shouldn't I?

Yes you really should! It's not as fiddly as it looks, and you get a rhythm going with the pastry.

It is down right said. People eating process gunk every day all day. I think it is interesting to note that I recently joined adayinmylife and the photographs of processed and fried food is all plentiful. And many posters have been from the U.K.

Staggering to me.

The end product looks divine. *MUNCH*

That's a great icon! Love the colours :)

I physically can't eat most processed food. I can't bring myself to eat fast food (with the exception of fish 'n' chips, though that's rare these days), or sliced white bread, processed meat, fake cheese etc. You can really notice it in people's skin can't you? The people on these shows of Jamie's, have such sickly pasty skin - and bad teeth! I know, common in the UK, but they don't have a reputation for good food do they?! Centuries of bad diet have taken its tolls on their genetics, I'm sure.

Yes, we watched it... I think it was last year. I really admire his perseverance in the face of so many obstacles. He's one of the few TV chefs who puts his money where his mouth is.

And that pie looks lovely!

Yes his perseverance is something to admire! It's sometimes hard to watch, not just for the awful food people are shovelling in but how resistant they are. I really admire how he tries to get city councils on board and everything, too.

I love spanikopita! I thought I wouldn't but we made it in class some time ago. I normally don't like phyllo (as far as I'm concerned you may as well eat paper, bleh) but this is the one thing that's made with it that I actually like (and wouldn't substitute puff pastry for!)

God I know it's sad, isn't it? Like my little cousins who will only eat Tyson chicken nuggets and grilled cheese sandwiches. And not even whole wheat bread for the sandwiches either, and that nasty Kraft American "cheese" (GRRRR!!!*sob* whoever named it that deserves to be shot. American cheese, my behind.)

Ha! Good-o! So, no improvements to me recipe then? I actually really like filo pastry, even though it's a bit time-consuming. In pies and baklava, it's got a slight chewiness to it that I like.

Ugh. Your cousins should see the bit where Jamie, faced with about 10 little kids who would only eat chicken nuggets, showed them exactly what was in them - they were rightly revolted and refused to eat them afterwards! I can't bring myself to eat one. They don't even try to make the "meat" look like chicken!

My brother recently commented: "I want to kill the plastic cows that make the plastic cheese!" You reminded me of that :) That stuff is nasty. I won't touch it. I don't like orange cheese either - they add a cancer-causing ingredient to give it the colour, same as in Fanta and Twisties.

You know, I don't eat cheese much anymore, and when I do I get it from the import case. It's fucking expensive which is why I don't eat it much (I just paid $13 for real parmegianno-regiano cheese, whereas ordinary domestic parmesan is right around $4), that and the less animal product we eat we the healthier we'll be. I could never give up meat and dairy entirely, but using less is no big deal to me, especially since I have a family history of cancer and diabetes. I do still have some orange cheddar that I bought forever ago and I think I'll just throw it out. I know I won't eat it now that I know what's in it, and it's just taking up space.

Ooh, that's expensive! I think we pay about $8 for a large wedge of it, but more ($10?) for straight parmesan. It's worth it though. That powder parmesan shit smells like feet and tastes even worse!
