What the hell...?

Okay, so I admit that I don't really follow the news all that much (particularly politics, as it bores me to tears), but I was trolling through the odd news over at Yahoo and found a headline at the bottom of the article I read (about how this guy thought his dead neighbor's body, sitting out on the patio for a week, was just a Halloween decoration ( Read more... )

in the life of me, blathering

Well said.

Also, nice job on the weight loss! I'm also trying to only eat when hungry...the trick is telling the difference between "I'm bored hungry" and "I'm actually hungry"...for some reason when I have nothing to do, my body immediately says "I know! Let's eat!"

I also eat a lot of granola, which probably isn't good. Right now I'm about 20 pounds heavier than I would like to be. I only drink water and milk (and wine), so I know soda is not the problem... ;-)

Do the people in your gov't realize that the rest of the world drinks soda too? I mean...Europeans drink soda, and they aren't as fat as Americans...all of Asia drinks soda too, maybe not as often, but it's sold there just the same...and man, it's extremely hard to find a chubby person in China (who is not a little kid).

People can be so stupid.

Thanks! In figuring out the difference between being honestly hungry and that 'my belly's full but my teeth are still hungry' boredom-thing, I kinda had outside help. Shortly after I moved back in with my mom, before we figured out how to get the cash to move, we were beyond broke - Mom was pulling in a whopping $180 per month, which was just enough to pay for the electricity. It took me two months to convince Mom that applying for food stamps wasn't a bad thing - the program is engineered to help folk who're in situations like ours was, it didn't mean we were looking for a government handout or charity, just for something to keep body and soul together long enough for me to find a job (Mom's disabled and can no longer work). In the intervening two months, we were on strict rations (which would have still been considered a feast by the standards of most third-world countries). I figured out that being honestly hungry had side-effects that being bored-hungry didn't. Feeling weak and getting dizzy when standing up were two of ( ... )

Did you know that milk isn't really that healthy for adults? Nature designed milk to be the food of babies - as a result, it's packed full of fats and proteins. It was only a genetic mutation (originating in Northern Europe, around the end of the last major ice-age, about 15 thousand years ago) that made it so that adults can consume milk? If you do a little research, you'll find that most of the world's cultures are lactose-intolerant - for example, just how many Asian foods are dairy-based? However, since most whites do have this mutant ability to process dairy foods, it would be silly to wholly ignore it. Milk is healthier than soda, true, but if you're done growing (for future reference, a person is only totally done growing anything but hair around the time they turn twenty-five - I know it sounds absurd, but it is true) you should switch to skim milk. If you're used to drinking whole milk, don't go straight to skim - you won't like it at all. Go from whole to 2% to 1% and then to skim over the course of several months. ( ... )

I know what you mean - since I moved in and started cooking, my flatmate has lost loads of weight (nearly 10 inches from his waist), even though he's eating bigger portions and more frequently! All I've really done is cut most of the fatty rubbish from his diet - boiled, steamed and baked mixed veg instead of chips, grilled meat instead of fried, home made cakes instead of shop ones, and sweeteners in his tea and coffee instead of sugar. It's really easy, isn't it?

Being healthy, once one learns how to out-think the media and pop-culture, really is absurdly easy. The trick is in learning how to pay attention to what's really important (you own self).
