You're not the only one voicing that theory. I think Karl Urban might have even slipped in an interview and said Gary Mitchell, so it makes for some exciting storytelling!

Interesting theory, but I have a feeling it will deal with more of Kirk dealing with his own dark side - or a giant black hole in the center of the galaxy. But good guess and nice thought.
