Isn't fiction SUPPOSED to take on a life of its own?

I only write poetry sometimes, and I can't write a poem on purpose, let alone on order... the poems come to me at their own will like timid creatures, and I can only help them take shape, and must be careful not to scare them away... you seem to be better off than me.
