Pansy returned his smile automatically, flipping her hair behind her shoulder. "Of course no one will bother us. Who do you think is supposed to be doing rounds right now?" The smile quickly turned into a roguish grin. "Okay fine, so you've got a hiding place. All right then." Pansy crossed her arms over her chest expectantly as she walked beside Draco, stepping doubletime to match his long strides. "Let's see it."
"I meant in terms of anyone overhearing," Draco clarified, heading for the stairs. He had taken this route so many times that he could practically walk it in his sleep; he even knew exactly what tricks the staircases liked to play.
He did note the reminder that she was Head Girl, though. As if he needed a reason to stay on her good side, though it was certainly debatable which one of them had the most power. Not that he planned to be particularly obvious, but rumour ought to be quite enough.
"You wouldn't get me in trouble, would you?" he teased, mouth twitching. "Or have they won you over?"
Pansy paused to hop over a snapping trick step that had very nearly tripped her up, muttering a curse under her breath. Gone for months and he still knew his way around better than anyone. "Oh, I don't know. Guess you'll just have to be extra nice to me from now on." Pansy gave him a cheeky smile and then a nudge with her shoulder when they reached yet another staircase.
Then came another staircase. And another. And another! "Are we almost there yet?" She asked, unable to help herself after the fifth staircase. Merlin, were they going to the other side of the moon or what? Where was this place?
Draco glanced at her, smiling despite himself. He nudged her back, glad for her playful demeanor. It put him in a much better mood.
"Two more," he said easily, only slightly out of breath. "You remember the room we caught that sorry excuse for an 'army' in, remember?"
It seemed odd to him to describe the room that way now, but it was the only way Pansy would know about it. Surely if he made it open as something different than the room of hidden things, it wouldn't be too depressingly nostalgic.
Pansy looked at Draco, then the wall... had it really been two years since they busted up Saint Potter's gang? Nearly. In some ways, it seemed like yesterday but in others, it seemed a lifetime away. Anything she wanted, hidden somewhere behind an invisible door. With a nervous little nod, she started to walk, pacing beside the blank stretch of wall. Someplace quiet. Someplace cozy. Someplace private. Quiet, cozy and private. Quiet, cozy and private. Quiet, cozy and private. She had been so focused on her pacing and her concentrating, she almost missed seeing a wooden door appear out of nowhere
( ... )
When the door appeared, Draco tensed briefly, just a little nervous that she might somehow stumble on the room of hidden things. But no, it was the kind of room he'd expect Pansy to open, comfortable and warm.
He gestured for her to go in first, with a small smile. "Interesting colour choice," he commented when he entered, taking a seat on one of the red couches. "Nicer than Gryffindor red."
Still, with the crackling fire, it almost seemed to him that they'd entered the common room of their rival house. All that was missing were the house flags - Draco could only assume they had those, since he had never been inside the tower and probably never would.
"Of course it is." Pansy replied, wrinking her nose in distaste as she continued to wander the room, peeking around this corner and that. "That's garish. This is classy." She was quite pleased with herself and the room, Draco's smug little 'colour choice' comment aside. She took a seat beside him on the couch but stopped herself from getting too close. Being alone with him felt different than being in the common room. After worrying and wondering and worrying about how he was, almost all the time, he was back and she didn't know where to start.
"So how have you been?" She asked him quietly, staring down at her hands, neatly clasped in her lap. "Why did you come back? Does it have to do with... you know." Would he even tell her if it did?
The corners of Draco's mouth twitched up in amusement. It was a much nicer shade of red, especially without the horribly clashing gold that often looked more like yellow. He wondered briefly if it had been her choice or the room's, but it wasn't very important.
"I'm fine," he reassured her. And it was the truth. He'd expected something much more grim from this castle, as if the very walls would try to keep him out. But then, being in this place or even thinking about it made him pessimistic. It was a horrid school, with only one house worth anything at all. "Everything is fine, that's why I'm here."
It was the truth, in a way. If they hadn't been able to infiltrate Hogwarts, Draco would not be here. And getting behind the enemy lines - so to speak - had to be a good thing. As far as Draco knew, Hogwarts was the last safe place for those on the side of the Light, especially now that Grimmauld Place was gone.
"Don't worry," he continued, gently brushing her arm with his fingertips. "You're safe."
Pansy stilled, momentarily distracted by the soft, ticklish sensation of his fingers on her skin. "Mmhmm." She hummed in agreement. And so was he. He was here, safe at Hogwarts, instead of being out there doing things she didn't care to think about... without her. It wasn't like when they were thirteen and she'd been able to cheer him up by playing simpering nurse over an injured arm, but he still needed her, whether he knew it or not.
He did still need her, didn't he?
"I'm glad you came back." She found herself leaning into his touch despite her original attempt to keep a safe distance. "Everything was... different, without you around."
Draco's fingers stilled for a moment, resting just below the inside of her elbow. He watched them, not quite ready to meet her eyes yet, and then let his hand fall to the couch between them with a small sigh.
"I didn't want to," he admitted. He could not seem to keep completely still, but drew small curlicues on the red upholstery. "I got used to being done with school."
One of his shoulders lifted in half a shrug, as if it wasn't that important. His grey eyes flicked up to hers, briefly. "I did miss you, though."
