Pain...

Eddie's mind concentrated on it, knowing it meant he was still alive. His back stung and was flushed with warmth where the Dementor had attacked him. And then the world streaked and streamed. His vision- for the brief time his eyes were open- blurred away.

The Dementor swept past him and drew in breath. Eddie was wracked by bone-chilling cold, his skin stiffened by the frost and chill that grew upon him.

He couldn't concentrate, least of all on his warm thoughts. His family was away in Scotland, he had no love life. The image of the Library felt tapped and worn. But he couldn't just... give up.

Duncan narrowed his eyes, took a breath. Now or never. He bolted past Agatha, past the Muggles, and clambered up the stairway. The cold was nearly suffocating, squeezing his chest painfully, and practically making his vision swim.

Dementors everywhere...

A sandy haired boy lay on the floor, a Dementor leaning over him. Duncan raised his wand, summoned...

Golden hair and clever fingers... Childish laughter... Halloween alcohol...

"Expecto Patronum!"

Aggie forced her feet to move and continued up the stairs, her hand shaking around her wand. Cold, so cold... and Eddie, he didn't call back, something's wrong... She watched as Duncan cast his patronus and drew hers forward to attack their targets, and only as she stepped to her partner's side did she see the sight before her.

Her breath caught, and a tear formed at the corner of her eye. In a blink, she was reminded of all the biggest reason of all why she had few friends - it hurt too much to see them in trouble. Her patronus faltered and she breathed in deeply, closing her eyes to try and find the memories to renew it. Among the many images in her mind, she clung to the one of two young teenagers playing at love for the very first time.

"Expecto Patronum!" The horse reappeared and leapt at the Dementor.

Eddie could hear the hum... the almost angelic sound of Patronii flaring around him. He could feel their energy and warmth, and sense their brightness even from behind his eyelids. He stumbled to bring himself up onto his elbow, his cheek and face numb. He could hear the Dementors screeching and arcing away from the sources of good.

He tried to stand but still felt weak and trembly. His muscles were cold and stiff and he could barely feel them. Come on... up. Get up. He fumbled up onto his knees.

Marius was walking on his way to the club. He was raring to go and dance away his troubles, and all things that would keep him awake at night. He had even decided to magically dye his hair blue for his night out. He had all of his glowing jewelry underneath a black leather biker's jacket, along with his usual tight black jeans ( ... )

Once the Dementor was no longer immediately threatening Eddie's life, Aggie broke formation and rushed over to his side. She crouched down and tried to slide her arms under his to give him a hand in getting to his feet.

"If you wanted me to come over, Eddie, all you had to do was owl, you know. No need to start all this just for me," she teased for her own sanity. "Now let's get you back on your feet so you could be of some use, eh?"

She heard footsteps on the stairs and lifted her head to see what other reinforcements had come. There was Tonks, another Auror, and coming up the stairs... ah, excellent. "Heathroppe, there's more over there!" she shouted, gesturing to the side with her head in the hopes that he'd concentrate his patronus there.

It was just such an Eddie thing to do. Even when kicked and down, he grinned at her and looked at her. Eddie's dark grey eyes, though looking tired, regarded her with playful warmth. His blue-tinted, cold lips turned themselves into a chuckle, "Oh you know me, a flair for the dramatic. And anyway, the Dementor ate my Owl."

Eddie managed to stand, though his blood-stained and ripped oxford showed just why he had gone down. Fortunately, it was mostly superficial- the Dementor had raked his mid-back. He breathed a frosty breath up as he arched slightly, "They've killed several Muggles... I couldn't help it. Not sure who they're after..."

"Oh Merlin, look at you - we can't take you anywhere..." She frowned worriedly at the ripped and bloody shirt, knowing the cold was more dangerous when one was injured. Once she had him standing, she leaned him back against the wall before moving to remove her outer robes. She draped the dark material around him, giving him a look that ordered him not to argue with her, despite the shiver that overcame her. Her thinner casual robes did little to keep out the chill, but she was uninjured and thus better able to ward it off.

"Now stay here and out of trouble while we take care of the rest of them," she ordered. "And don't forget your patronus, or I'll be forced to come down here myself and throttle you."

With one last look to the rest, Aggie followed Duncan as he left the scene. She could feel a sudden onset of cold and shivered, bringing up her wand.

"Another's nearby," she said, needing to break the silence around her which was almost as cold as the air against her skin. Everything was so terribly affected by the Dementors' presence. "How many of the bloody things are there?"

Agreeing that they should split up and fend off the Dementors, Marius turned to Tonks and the man he knew to be Remus Lupin, "Shall we get going then? The dementors aren't going to leave on their own terms, now are they?"

Remus could feel the sucking misery of Dementors still swirling, and kept silent as the Aurors discussed plans and helped the young man on the floor. He didn't know anyone but Tonks, so he focused on holding his Patronus at some strength, allowing it to move in the direction where Lupin felt the worst of the cold and despair...

The plan seemed to be to head outside, but Remus worried about the people inside. Still, outside, they could make sure the Dementors left the populated area... He suddenly had a vision of James and Lily's funeral, the caskets being lowered into the cold earth at Cedric's Hollow...Dementors, closer now. "They're coming closer -- feel them? Might be trying to get outside." Suddenly, he heard the sound of a child sobbing. "Mommy! Mommy!" It was coming closer. Remus gripped his wand more tightly and said "Lumos!" He directed the light down the hall, and saw a girl, no more than five, standing beside the body of a woman.

Eddie, after being summarily dismissed by Duncan and watching Aggie and he go, turned to the remaining three- Remus, Tonks and Heathtroppe. Tonks and Marius he did not know, but upon locking why with Remus, a strange smile graced Eddie's exhausted and pale features.

"Professor Lupin?" He stated in surprise, wincing as he held his arm close to his chest. It helped with his injury, for some inexplicable reason.

He too heard the child's sob, and followed Remus' Lumos to the little girl. If his heart could sink lower, it would have. "I couldn' save 'er... any of them. There's... at least eight Dementors if I had te guess." He bit his lip and shuffled in place, stifling his emotion. He was immediately brought back to that fateful day at St. Mungo's as the casualties from the Dementors rolled in. "I'll get her..."
