Fred was only hanging about the shop, rather bored. George had insisted on hiring a bloke, somebody named Stanley or sommat, to work the floor most days, so there was nothing interesting going on and he wasn't in an inventing mood. Instead, he found himself loitering by the windows, thinking rather moodily about how long it had been since he'd had any real fun. The last time his blood had really been pumping was the night with Narcissa, not so long back. Now that had been a challenge ( ... )

Draco spun around, fingers clenching around his wand. He was immediately wary of anyone that spoke to him like that, and with good reason: they weren't on his side.

He was less than pleased to see a Weasley, but it stood to reason that they had nothing better to do than spout empty insults. The comment stung, especially because of his current situation, but he appeared perfectly unruffled.

"You wouldn't know, of course," he returned easily, starting to smile. "Your mother kicked you out of that hole you called home, didn't she? Ran out of room and money to take care of you all, I imagine."

"Ah, mothers," Fred said, with a wide grin. "Mothers, mothers, mothers..." He ran his eyes lazily over Draco and said, "You know, I think you and I are in agreement on one point: your mother is something quite special. I very much enjoyed...spending time with her the other night." Fred grinned salaciously at Draco.

That was not at all the reaction Draco had expected. Generally, insulting the Weasleys caused something more along the lines of angry red faces and a clumsy, brutish attack; this one seemed perfectly content with insults alone.

Draco found it just a little bit disappointing. He hadn't had a good fight with someone he actually genuinely disliked in ages... on the other hand, starting an actual duel in Diagon Alley with no one to back him up wasn't the best idea. But he couldn't let that comment slide, either.

"You're delusional," he spat, annoyed. "Malfoys don't associate with blood traitors."
