Chapter 8 - Black Butterfly

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A/N: My only regret is that this is shorter than most chapters. xD The moments when I'm inspired are few and far between, looking at my journal entries.
In some alternate reality, this would have been funny for Adrian, to wonder what happened to the happy-go-lucky girl he had only known for two weeks do a complete 360 degree turn.
Too bad this was reality, and the officers were in a circle far from the batch's view.
"Hey, what happened to y--"
"Nagant, I know you just can't wait to talk to Browning, but please, this is important. Now, this is the first of many Thursdays, so let's do this right--Luger!"
Luger, a man Nagant could only categorize as a 'brilliant gremlin' stepped up from the front of his section.
"Yes, sir?"
"Make sure that they don't look anywhere else, or it's demerits for you." Miguel patted Luger's head like anyone would pet a puppy.
"Understood." Luger ran back and stepped up onto the stage and watched, Nagant hearing cries of "Hey, sir Garand said not to look anywhere else--I'm warning you," and "I MEAN IT!"
Turning his attention back to the officers, he saw Sten raise her hand.
"All right, I'll get National Anthem."
"The Vows for me." Browning deadpanned. "What's up with you?" Raighn asked.
Browning looked at Raighn. "Not my morning."
"Not that, I mean...ah, I keep forgetting, you're new, like Nagant. The Vows have to be said by two people."
Elizabeth Browning shrugged and looked at Sten. "Would you?"
"Sure," Hiarra Sten said easily. "I can do both."
Garand took off his white jacket and offered it to the albino. "It isn't yours, but will it help?"
She shook her head. "I'm fine, sir."
"I'll get them to remember the Cadet Code." Mauser offered.
"So, I'll be raising the flags with Piniple then?" Nagant asked, and Piniple nodded. "Simple job. I'll take the Philippine flag to the left, and you take the School Flag to the right, Sir Nagant." Out of all of them, Piniple and Raighn were the only true dark-looking ones, with muscled skin and firm demeanors.
To Nagant, they were like black butterflies hovering amongst them, and had a half-smile on his lips in a fit of irony.
In some cultures, a butterfly is an omen of death.
Garand went upstage and, looking left and right, said, "Everyone, stand!"
The batch all stood, but they took their time, wiping dust from their pants.
"No, it has to be faster--from the beginning--YOU EITHER LEARN TO STAND QUICK OR YOU GET SHOT, SO EITHER YOU DO IT FASTER, MORE SNAPPY, OR YOU CAN ALL GET PUNISHMENT INSTEAD."
The batch complied and Garand sighed deeply, placing a hand on his forehead.
"So, you guys can follow simple instructions. Good. We'll begin the Flag Ceremony now. Do a good job."
It was going along, quite nicely, until Browning and Sten asked every student to raise their right hands and to pause for the Vows of a true Rosenrot.
"A true Rosenrot has three vows." Elizabeth started.
"One, to be thankful for every day that the Lord has given us." Sten recited, the rest of the students following.
"Two, to always do my best every day."
"Three, to always offer help to--"
"Shot through the heart and you're to blame
Darlin' you give love a bad name!"
Nagant felt the vibration in his pants and grabbed at his phone, letting go of the rope used to hoist the flag, and ran inside the Corps Office saying in an embarrassed voice he hardly even recognized as his own, "Sorry! Forgot to turn my phone off!"
Clicking on "answer," his voice collided with a highly-amused Intelligence source, Noahn.
"Didn't I tell you, *never* to contact me when I'm in school?!"
"Emergency. Details for your next mission's in an envelope underneath the table. Code 1-4-6 EM."
"Understood." Nagant ended the call and, placing the phone on silent/vibrate, he kept it in his pocket before feeling underneath the table.
"There you are, you little bugger."
And then another chapter has begun. \o/
