*yunho likes sensible things, like ties that match his suits and scarves in the dead of winter. he also likes warm drinks and curling under blankets, also in the dead of winter. jaejoong knows all of these things, so he purposely buys him hot pink ties and scarves in the middle of summer so that he has time to lose them before winter.
on his birthday, jaejoong gave yunho a pair of pink flamingo socks. he'd had to go to all sorts of stores to find that exact pair, and then he had to fight a thirteen year old girl over them, but it had been worth it to see the exasperated look on yunho's face when he opened the package.
"why are you always buying things like this?" yunho asked, and put them in the 'drawer of things he'll never use' that he started because of these radically weird presents.
jaejoong grinned. "you'll thank me some day!"
yunho never thought anything of what he said. jaejoong walks a very fine line between the sane and insane, so he usually just files his words away into a corner of his mind.
of course, after dbsk changes and five becomes two, yunho starts to work harder than ever before. he doesn't like to complain though, because complaining is not a leaderly thing--or a yunho-y thing to do. he's remembers a time when he had nothing, and whenever he feels like times are hard, he just goes back and thinks of sleeping on the street, and he pulls the strength to keep going out from under his belt. he's more than just jung yunho when he's a leader--he must always think of the other member of his team.
changmin is one of the easier members to take care of, but yunho feels like working so hard with just him there has taken away a lot of the fun they used to have with the other members. but things happen, and at least they have each other. of course, changmin is still changmin, still haughty and sarcastic. he's always been and probably always will be all prickly pins and needles.
one day, yunho gets a call from an unregistered number. thinking that it might be another one of those prank calls, he picks it up. "hello?" he answers, absently stirring a pot of ramyun for changmin and trying not to remember not to touch the stove and burn his hand.
"yunho-uknow hwaiting!" a vaguely familiar voice shouts, and then hangs up right away. Yunho drops the chopsticks in his hand and yanks the phone away from his ear in order to stare at it.
changmin comes in a minute later, dressed in baggy sweats and hair still wet from the shower. "hyung, i didn't think you'd have so much trouble with cooking." he leans on the counter. yunho just stares at him, dumbfounded. "noodles are burning," he admonishes with a roll of his eyes.
yunho snaps out of his reverie and turns the stove off with a curse, and clicks the callback number. he feels kind of like his old self again, a leader of five, like a parent looking after four pranksters, as he calls back, washing off his utensils in the sink. changmin starts to finish the ramyun, mixing in the sause himself because yunho is busy being distracted and his patience when hungry only lasts so long.
yunho pays him no mind, stepping back against the counter as the mystery person picks up on the last ring.
"jaejoong-hyung?" yunho cautions, scratching at the back of his neck and trying to pretend that what he's feeling isn't hope.
"it's u-know time~~" the voice sounds high off of helium. yunho almost smiles, but the other person hangs up again.
"what are you doing?" changmin asks, suspiciously, as yunho calls the number again with a determined look. for the first time, yunho ignores him, listening to the rings impatiently. changmin scowls and shoves half the noodles in the pot into his mouth at once, glaring at the phone as though he can make it combust into flames and burn in hell.
"u got the wrong numba!"
yunho starts wandering towards the living room during the call, and this time when they hang up, there's an interesting squibbling noise at the front door. as he gets closer, he presses the callback number one more time, and hears very distinctly the sound of "ayyyyy gurl" from the hallway.
this time he does grin, and as the three boys on the other line answer, he whips the door open to expose them. the three stare up at him, looking like deer caught in the headlights, and when he looks back at the magnae, he looks, for once, kind of speechless. yunho tries not to look too smug. this is the perfect chance for his little makeshift family to be back together-finally. this is the one chance he's been waiting for, the one he's been hoping would happen all this time.
"we just made ramyun." he pulls them inside. "join us."
"hyung!" yoochun and junsu cry, and suddenly he's pressed against the wall with limbs attacking him from all sides. he suspects there are tears, and maybe they're his own or not. after junsu knees him in the spleen in excitement, he's almost certain they're from pain.
then, the two run into the room and stop in front of changmin, who's still holding the lid to the ramyun pot, oddly silent. yunho's almost certain that the youngest is going to chuck the lid at them, grab his coat and punch jaejoong in the face on the way out, but he doesn't. he puts down the pot, crosses his arms, and gives them a stern glare.
"call me hyung," is all he says.
junsu and yoochun exchange glances, worried looks turning to ecstatic expressions once more in a flash. then they pounce on changmin, and yunho turns back to the doorway. jaejoong looks years older than he really is. his eyes catch yunho's as he slowly toes off his shoes.
"i honestly don't know how you could ever take care of all of us," he confesses with a shy smile. "those two in the same room is a disaster."
yunho laughs loudly over the three in the kitchen. changmin has apparently finally taken to beating them up. he turns back as jaejoong leans down to arrange them more neatly and he finally notices yunho's socks. they're an insane color pink, with flamingos dancing around the toes and up the ankles. he's sure that they're soft because he's the one who picked them out.
then he's laughing, covering his mouth with his hand and doubling over. yunho's the one who reaches behind him and closes the door, at the same time pulling jaejoong into a hug. "took you long enough," he whispers, as jaejoong's arms encircle his waist. finally, after so long, yunho's chest doesn't feel lined. he takes a deep breath and smells vanilla shampoo, and when he releases it, the worlds okay again.
"too long," jaejoong murmurs, and yunho just hums in agreement. perhaps it doesn't make too much sense, but all yunho wants is his family to be together--his wild, crazy, untamed family that is going to make him age thirty years for every year he's alive.
