They were roommates before they debuted, back when their biggest problems were how to use the subway and helping Tiffany--no Stephanie (Pani) with her Korean. Back then, Taeyeon extended her vocabulary of both english with Tiffany and chinese with Zhang Liyin, and the three would go around town to experience everything that Seoul had to offer.
She would take them to the historical places and the coffee places. She showed them which cake shops were the best and where to find the best coffee and the important things too, like which cosmetics store was the best and why.
In the end, she fell hard for Pani's eye smiles and her giggling laugh. It wasn't really fair, but it wasn't to be unexpected either. Time passed and she tucked away her feelings, until Stephanie turned into Tiffany (but was still Pani) and they turned from girls to young women who held the heart of a nation.
Taeyeon tried not to think about how far they'd gone, success wise. As a young women she's done things she hasn't been proud of, and she's also done things she has been proud of. She's happy for her nine sisters who she gets along with. She might not be much of a leader but she does try hard to be one.
She likes the nights where the nine of them stay up late before a comeback and just sit down in the living room. They hold hands and reminisce together about what they've gone through and done. Sometimes they're quiet, thinking about the morrow. It doesn't stay quiet long, mostly because Hyoyeon always has a pillow to throw at someone or sly hands that are ready to tickle. Usually, these nights end with mass pillow fights and a lot of laughter. Sometimes the manager needs to come in and tell them to go to bed.
These are the nights when she'll slip out of bed after Sunny's fallen asleep and will find herself on the balcony, staring down at the city lights. It's kind of magical, how pretty they are in the darkness, how lonely. When she looks down at her hands, resting on the window sill, she notices how lonely they are too, and twines her fingers together. The effort just makes them feel so much more alone, and she turns away with a sigh, wondering why she even came out in the first place since they need to be up in an hour for their schedules. The cold air bites at her bare neck and her exposed ankles, but when she turnes to the door, there's a figure there, watching her.
Tiffany smiles at her, that familiar smile that's still so similar even though it's changed, too. Everything changes, but one thing that doesn't change is that Taeyeon is always alone where it counts, no matter how many people surround her. This is the aching pain that surrounds her, eats her from the inside out and turns her smile lonely.
A breeze makes her shoulders shake, so she wraps her arms around herself. "What are you doing up?" She asks, wondering why there's a lump in her throat that won't go away.
Tiffany just joins her on the balcony, shutting the door behind her, something Taeyeon forgot to do. "Joining you," she says simply, drawing her braided hair over her shoulder and wrapping her arms around Taeyeon's shoulders in a sudden embrace.
Tiffany feels warm against the cold air, and Taeyeon feels like she might die. This doesn't feel anything like inside, and once she calms down, she realizes that the world is quiet enough that she can hear Tiffany's heartbeat against hers and feels her warm breath against the back of her neck.
It's odd, but she likes it, and she's not quite ready to be alone again when Tiffany pulls away. There's nothing quite like the disappointment of loneliness, she decides, feeling her eyes well up when the warmth leaves.
Until Tiffany takes her hands and swings them back and forth. "You don't have to be alone you know."
Taeyeon swallows hard, staring at their joined hands with wide and dumbfounded eyes. Isn't it odd how one of these beautiful and lovely girls will always remind her of how much she needs them?
"I'm going to be here always." Tiffany smiles her adorable eyesmile, and Taeyeon aches to believe her.
"Nothing lasts forever," Taeyeon says, maybe a bit cynically.
"I know," Tiffany nods, and Taeyeon can't believe she forgot everything that she's been through in her life. "But that doesn't mean I'm not going to be here." Then she did the unthinkable.
Taeyeon's mouth drops open when Tiffany kisses her. When she pulls away, she can still taste the peppermint on her lips. "Oh," is all she can say, when Tiffany hugs her close again. This time, Taeyeon's arms wrap around her and all she can do is say, oh again, like some sort of freaky mantra.
There's a warmth there, on a balcony above a busy street with an ambulance flying by that goes unheard, and horns honking and people talking all night long. It's a warmth oblivious to all of that bustle, a warmth that comes from being able to occupy one's thoughts with someone else and can make a person forget that loneliness existed.
"Come on," Tiffany whispered in her ear. "I'm cold and I want breakfast," she said. Giggling, Taeyeon followed her.
"Is this breakfast at Tiffany's?" She asked, giggling.
Tiffany rolled her eyes and opened the door. "No, it's breakfast-on-you." Taeyeon laughed again, this time a lot louder as she slipped the door closed. She couldn't help herself, not when she felt happy--completely happy. It was a lot different from almost-happy and nearly-happy.
But everything is different when you're happy. And even if it doesn't last forever--at least she's happy now. Her hand still felt warm where Tiffany held it, and she couldn't help but give it a squeeze idly throughout the day. It just felt nice to not be alone, all the time.
"Thank you," she murmured in Tiffany's ear one night, when they were piled on the couch watching a movie. Tiffany just drew her hair out of her eyes and pressed her lips against her forehead.
Taeyeon wasn't sure if Tiffany felt exactly the way she did. She was odd that way. She did know, however, that Tiffany liked breakfast in bed and roses and smiles. She knew that her sleeping habits often made her scared because she slept with her eyes open. She knew that Tiffany liked her coffee with two creams and two and a half sugars, and a hint of honey in her tea.
Even if nothing lasted forever, loneliness didn't either, because eventually, someone was going to come along and make her feel like the world was full of people who mattered, instead of people that existed. And that, she figured, was worth all the waiting.
