your voice was the soundtrack of my summer. ryeowook's sure that when summer is over, real life is going to kick back in again. the jocks and bullies will return into his life and his job at the music store sanctuary will become only a part time one once more. it's an understatement to say that he's not looking forward to school, especially since there's only been one highlight of his entire summer since his mother gained an abusive boyfriend for the sake of heroin, again.
the music store he works at is down the smallest street in town between a laundromat owned by this old chinese couple and a vietnamese fish restaurant. he's not sure how sanitary either one are, especially since the chinese couple is blind and the restaurant is always out of fish.
all he needs to care about is making it in to work on time so that he can spend all day getting one or two lost tourists and a few kids making their way into the store sometime at five. he's pretty sure they're shoplifting, but they're in the indie section, and he's way past that part of his life.
he likes to listen to a singer with a husky voice and an endless supply of vocal prowess. the man can sing better than anyone he'd ever heard, and he's heard some really great singers in his small insignificant life.
on his last day of work, he finds a cd that he doesn't have yet and takes the money for it out of his pay stub. he tucks it into his ghetto cd player on the way home and buries it into his layers of fabric. the music is enough to stop his breath and make him wish his mom hadn't ruined his voice to the extent that it would need thousands of dollars of surgery. he tries not to care, but he does after all.
the voice is the right mixture of chocolate and cigarette smoke--the harmless kind that just looks cool but can't harm you. he realized long ago that he can ignore the back ground music and just listen to the vocals because they're the most beloved.
in reality, ryeowook believes that this voice is the whole reason he's made it through the summer. in reality, he knows that it will be the only reason he'll make it through the school year, too. when he gets home he sits on the sidewalk because he can hear his moms screams through the audio of his headphones. the neighbors sprinklers are going off to water their perfect lawn, sending water splashing around in the light of the setting sun.
tomorrow he'll come to school with a bruised wrist and maybe a scar or two, but he's also going to have a voice in his heart and a reason to live. if there is a heaven on earth, it's kim jongwoon's voice. ryeowook has never been more sure of anything in his life.
