taeyeon likes mcflurries at midnight, while sitting on the corner of the sidewalk, right before it drops off into the drive through lane. she likes the potentially dangerous feel of cars rushing by and making her hair rush around her head in disorderly catastrophe. even when the cold is sinking into her bones from a freezing winter air, she'll still order a small mcflurry with m&m's and crouch on the edge of the sidewalk to eat.
it's here that she meets seohyun, wearing her polite skirt and blazer, with sleepy eyes and arm in arm with an all too awkward boyfriend that seems all too nice. seohyun smiles at her and taeyeon smiles back; and that's the only moment they'll ever have together; understanding each other.
taeyeon is sucking ice cream off her spoon when seohyun sits beside her on the curb, her stiletto's scratching the pavement.
"this looks like fun," she giggles, and taeyeon feels a strange love blossoming in her chest. "i've never had a mcflurry at midnight before." her spoon reveals m&m's, just like taeyeon. it brings a strange warmth to her heart when she has no idea why.
"it's the only time to have them." taeyeon smiles, amazed by the way the lamplight shines in seohyun's eyes like starlight. indeed, this is the only time that the taste of ice cream matches the crisp, sharp night air.
over time, taeyeon's nightly treat became her nightly treat with seohyun, when the girl continued to come night, after night. sometimes with her boyfriend, sometimes without. it was the ones alone that taeyeon liked the best, because she didn't have to feel so guilty about the growing sparks in her chest when they were alone together.
"unnie, why do you come here every night?" seohyun asked one night, after a week or two (taeyeon lost track) of nightly meetings. her boyfriend wasn't there this night because it was friday, and he had a gig with his band at some club.
taeyeon thought about her life for a minute, about the countless papers she copied and filed and organized, day after day, and how she would never really make it anywhere big because she was too busy being the underdog in an office building way to large for its own good. she didn't have the drive and she didn't have the willpower, because she wasn't really anything, anyways. she always had nothing but a voice that had long since died with too many colds.
"it's happiness," she smiled into her ice cream as a truck rushed by towards the drive through. happiness is taking a moment out of a pointless day to watch everyone else going about their own pointless lives. happiness is ice cream in a cup with m&m sprinkles. it's a friend that sits beside her, sharing the experience.
seohyun's lips are like cotton candy when they kiss; sweet, sticky, and so soft that they're like air. taeyeon has to put a hand on her cheek to know that she's really there because the timid breath against her mouth just isn't evidence and she doesn't want to open her eyes to know what the other is thinking.
seohyun kisses back, innocent and true. she doesn't have to say that it's her first kiss; taeyeon can feel it. but she loves how this kiss doesn't lie to her, how it shares with her a certain something that doesn't involve lists or orders or being bossed around. it's the most beautiful thing she's ever encountered, and she relishes it, holds it close and doesn't ever want to let go.
they exchange phone numbers after, and taeyeon puts a tiny heart next to seohyun's name so she will never, ever forget the tiny moment they shared, and won't mistake the tiny feelings she felt. just in case, because life makes you forget important things in the rush of every day life.
she's having coffee with sooyoung in the break room when she gets a text halfway through her hellish day. (she's already looking forward to ice cream and seohyun at midnight). she knows it's seohyun before she even flips her phone open; don't forget an umbrella tonight, unnie.♥ it says, but the heart at the end is all she remembers to bring with her at midnight.
she remembers the umbrella when it's too late; but even though it's storming so hard that the trash in the gutter is floating by her stiletto's, she still orders the same thing as always, and still crouches on the curb outside to eat. the ice cream isn't the same tonight, and it's cold when cars rush by and splash her with water. but tonight it's not tradition that keeps her here; it's seohyun.
by the time she arrives, taeyeon's hair is soaked through and her clothes are sticking to her body. she looks like she'd been dunked in a lake and she's shivering. seohyun gently puts her own sweater over her shaking shoulders and holds her umbrella over them both.
"unnie, did you forget?" she giggles, brushing hair out of her face. taeyeon leans into the touch of warm fingers against her cold forehead, and offers her some ice cream.
"i remembered you," she says, possibly feeling a tiny bit out of sorts. her gaze sticks on seohyun's lips and soft cheeks, and it's not long before she's hesitantly pressing her lips against hers. seohyun puts a hand on her cheek and returns the kiss less hesitant than before.
"unnie, yonghwa and i aren't together anymore," she says when they pull away, breaths hot and bad weather forgotten. seohyun's fretting with the fringe of her shirt. taeyeon takes her hand and squeezes it, but seohyun smiles at her like nothing's wrong in the entire world, and taeyeon believes her.
"is there something i can do?" she asks, quietly, silently hoping.
"no, we're just friends now, him and i," she presses, "it's better this way after all." when seohyun looks at her again, taeyeon can see her entire life in her gaze. for some reason she feels as though every single moment led to this one, and it's nice, feeling like all the hours pushing papers and waiting weren't for nothing.
"unnie," seohyun squeezes taeyeon's hand. "it's because i love you more," she says.
taeyeon can't breathe suddenly, and seohyun's hair is soft when she threads her fingers through it. she giggles a little as their breaths twine between them, and then they're kissing like it's the first time, and the last time; with heated breaths and warm fingers and beating hearts in between them. taeyeon's been waiting for this moment since she was born, and now that it's here she couldn't be happier.
seohyun is better than ice cream with m&m's at midnight. she's better than all the stars in the sky and all the cars that rush by. she's also worth every moment that taeyeon spent waiting with them, for her.
note: i've always wanted to write this pairing for some reason, lol. sorry for botching it, i hope you like it!
