Title: Reflected
Series: Devil Survivor
Characters: Gin, Aya
Summary: Sometimes she would tell him and story and sometimes she would ask him a question. This particular night, she did both.

Mystery the moon, a hole in the sky
A supernatural nightlight, so full but often right

By then, the bar had emptied out. It was far after closing time after all, but as per usual, she stayed a while longer.

You’d think a girl like who enjoyed the world as much as she did would be happy to take a bit of an evening stroll back to her apartment. Perhaps she could write a song about the pavement or the reflection of the remaining light once the sun left or how the air smelled like freshly crushed leaves this time of year.

Except when he asked her, she’d just laugh and say “I can see the pavement just fine from here, it’s always nice to get a different perspective on reflections, and you don’t need to be on the street to smell the air, Eiji.”

She had an answer for everything.

Or so he’d thought, until now, from her spot perched at the front window and her guitar in her lap, she thought to ask him a question.

“Would you say the moon is male or female?”

Pausing from his polishing of a glass, he sent her a look of confusion. “… Run that by me again?”

Her smile was reflected in the cup he held. “Another song I’m writing. ‘He’ and ‘she’, as well as ‘her’ and ‘him’ have the same number of syllables so it’s not a matter of rhythm. I just don’t know which pronoun to use.”

“Why don’t you tell me the story of it then?” Seemingly happy with his work, he put away the glass and leaned against the counter.

Meeting his gaze, she began to weave the tale of the sun and the moon for him.

“Despite what people say, I don’t think day and night are all that different. On the level of appearance, maybe, but the matter of fact is that they both produce light and only attract different people. So the sun and the moon can’t be that different either, on a metaphorical level. But the sun’s always been more popular, since more people are out during the day and more active and happier too.”

He nodded, admitting that technically, she was right. At the very least, all the children were out during the day and that guaranteed more smiles there. Taking that as encouragement, she continued on, lighting up so that in a way, he couldn’t help but liken her to that sun she was describing.

“Though if you think about it, both of them give light or are the brightest points in the sky- always. Especially the moon since it’s way more obvious than any other sun in a couple galaxies away,” she grinned and took a glance out the window.

Through yet another reflection in the glass, her expression of wonder was clear. “… but don’t you think the moon might get a little lonely? Since everyone’s gone when it’s just doing its job for them- being that guiding point for anyone who’s still out wandering.”

“So you wrote a song to the moon.” It was just a statement, though his exhalation did sound a bit like a laugh. This girl. She’d taken him in when he was wandering too- was she more like the moon than the sun then?

Apparently, she took pride in that statement and nodded- though she did laugh along with him. “Whaddya say then? Is the moon male or female? Macho enough to bear the burden of going on alone or do you think that’s more of a feminine strength?”

“I’m surprised you’re entrusting me with this task,” he shook his head. She found more beauty in nature than he did- how could she expect him to assign genders to it?

“Half the reason why I’m here is because I trust your input,” she carelessly waved a hand as if that would push away any of the doubts in his mind.

“Only half, huh?”

And she would only grin in response.

“Alright… Well, I’m going to have to say that the moon is of feminine persuasion.”

“Reason?” Already she was pulling out her notebook, likely to alter lyrics as necessary.

Walking over to her, he looked out the window and up at the subject of their conversation. As if gazing upon it solidified his decision, he nodded, “For one- Luna is definitely a girl’s name.” There was a content grin on his face as she laughed.

“And two?” She looked up at him expectantly.

“There’s something nice about a strong, mysterious woman. If you ask me, it’s better than the overplayed ‘tall, dark, and handsome’ man,” he shrugged.

Nodding slowly, she contemplated that answer. In the end, her expression settled on a grin as her eyes met his again, “I wouldn’t say it’s overplayed. How many men do you meet like that in real life? Besides the ones found at the local Gin bar after hours, I mean-“

A wry grin. If that’s how she wanted to play it- “I hear that’s always where the strong, mysterious women hang out, too.”

“Ah, so that must be the place to find a catch.”

Their laughter filled the otherwise empty bar, both roundabout compliments received quite positively.

A few discussions about lyrics and Artemis and Apollo later, Aya looked out the window again. At some point, she’d poured herself another drink in the glass Gin had just been cleaning earlier.

“… you think you could talk to the moon for me?”

A quirk of an eyebrow. “What, are you going on vacation somewhere you can’t see her?”

“No, not that,” she shook her head, “I’ll be talking to the moon - and the sun, for that matter - as long as I can. But I still don’t think it’d be quite enough for her.”

“How hard to please.”

“Even the strongest women get lonely,” the glass only slightly managed to obscure her smile behind it. “So, is that an agreement?”

“Hah… alright, I’ll talk to her if that’s what you want,” he shrugged and leaned back in his seat, “I trust that you’ll be there to make sure that I don’t slack?”

She glanced upwards and tilted her head thoughtfully before laughing, “Nah~” Without wasting a moment, she’d set down her glass and gotten up from her seat. Already she was retrieving her guitar and notebook.

Not expecting that, Gin called after her, “Leaving?”

A backwards glance at him coupled with a smile, “Isn’t that what makes me mysterious? I think I’ll have a nice chat with her as I walk back to my apartment.”

Though he didn’t expect to get through to her, he thought might as well offer, “Want me to walk you home or is three a crowd?”

“Pegged it on the second one. Luna and I need to have some girl time, you know?” she opened the door and waved goodbye, “See you tomorrow, Eiji~ Reflect a little on what I told you!”

Interestingly, it was no more than a month later- a month after that mysterious woman became even more mysterious- that when Gin looked up at the sky, it was so red that he couldn’t even recognize the moon anymore. And even reflecting upon that memory was a little bit harder.

Then he’d be all alone after closing time, thinking that the bar had lost what made it such a catch- not only to her, but to him as well.
