magser : "Chris gets a call from Jen while on the leverage set. He freaks cause Jen wouldn't call him there unless it was really bad...."
The set had been full of activity all morning, none of them getting any time to break between scenes. Christian was running on near empty, this episode of Leverage was an Eliot-centric one, filled with just as many emotional scenes as there were fight scenes and it was killing him. When they finally managed to break for lunch, the director deciding that the set wasn't right anyway and giving them some time to eat, Chris quickly checked his phone which had been left on his chair on silent the whole time to see six missed calls.
Chris dropped himself down onto his uncomfortable director’s chair with a groan, his muscles aching, deciding that food could wait. He clicked the missed calls button to see that they were all from one person; Jensen. No messages were left on his phone, but Jensen knew that Chris was busy filming today, surely he wouldn't have called if it wasn't important right? He thought to himself. Chris rubbed at his forehead, feeling a migraine beginning to build up behind his eyes. He needed a break, a proper one, but he knew he wouldn't be getting one any time soon.
With a sigh, Chris decided to just call Jensen back, if it wasn't important then he would just chew Jensen out, tear him a new one for disturbing him, even though he hadn't really, and if it was important... Well then it would be a good thing he called. The phone kept ringing, seemingly ready to go unanswered causing Chris to become more frustrated and irritated, he had had enough of this day, of the whole week, it was bad enough that he was being worked to the bone, but he hadn't even heard from Jared at all last night or at all today.
Jared! If he hadn't heard from his boyfriend and Jensen was now frantically trying to call him then it must mean that something was wrong with Jared! He thought, his mind now running a mile a minute, going through all the different possibilities of what was wrong with Jared. Chris jumped up from his chair just as the phone was answered, Chris running his hand through his hair when he finally heard Jensen's voice.
"Hello? Chris? Are you there?" Jensen asked when Chris didn't reply straight away.
"I'm here! Yeah, I'm here, what's going on Jen? Is it Jared? Is he okay?" Chris asked in a rush, not letting Jensen answer a question before he asked the next one.
"Whoa! Chris! Relax man, take some deep breaths or something! What's wrong with you?" Jensen asked instead of answering any of the frantic questions given to him.
"No! No, it's not what's wrong with me, it's what's wrong with Jared! Why the hell did you call me so many times? What's going on?" Chris begged, drawing the attention of cast and crew around him.
"I'm sorry for freaking you out man, we're not sure exactly what it is, Jared was complaining about stomach pains or something, we thought it was just a case of food poisoning but it got really bad really fast, doc checked him over and... Uh... Jared's in the hospital, it's his appendix, they're getting ready to operate now..." Jensen explained, waiting for the outburst.
"What?! Jared? Is he okay? What are they saying? Talk to me! What’s going on?" Chris demanded.
"I don't know, that's why I've been trying to call you, none of us are on Jared's medical release forms, only family can find out what's going on and yet none of the Padalecki's can make it out since there are no flights! They won't say anything over the phone and they've only given the studio the bare minimum of information... I was calling to see if maybe you would be able to get over here, they might release more information to you since, well... You know," Jensen explained, sounding frustrated and stressed.
"shit, I thought he had changed all that to include you, we were speaking about it and everything last time I was sent to the hospital... I'll see if I can get a flight in straight away," Chris promised, immediately hanging up and searching out airline numbers.
It didn't take as long as Chris was expecting to get a flight, so last minute, but he managed it without much hassle, speaking with Aldis and Beth about having to go before leaving the lot, he still needed to pack something, get all his shit together and go. His head was frantic, so many things needing to get done and the worry he was feeling was killing him. He called Jensen in the cab on his way to the airport, his passport, wallet, keys and a lot of random clothing tossed together quickly before leaving his home again.
Chris quickly explained everything to Jensen, the other man promising to pick him up once he landed. When he finally checked in, waiting in his terminal to leave for Vancouver, Chris finally allowed himself to stop and breathe. He sighed, fingers running through his hair and foot tapping against the floor impatiently, needing to be with Jared already.
"Come on, come on!" Chris whispered to himself, eyeing the departures board, willing time itself to speed along. He closed his eyes and thought about Jared, prayed for his lover to be okay, Jared had to be okay! There was no other option, he couldn't foresee a future where Jared wasn't okay.
Sure, it was only a simple appendectomy, but it was still surgery, Chris' brain kept going around and around in circles, his thoughts swinging from how everything was going to be fine to all the ways everything could go wrong. The flight itself was no better, just a random seat in the back of the plane between a snoring old guy and a lady that had too much bad perfume on. Chris all but counted down the minutes from take-off to landing, playing with his headphones and memorizing pieces of dialogue for the current episode of Leverage that they were filming, hoping that he hadn't caused too many problems by his sudden departure but knowing that the rest of them would deal with it.
He was barely back on solid ground for more than a minute before he saw Jensen. He grabbed his bags and rushed over to Jen, pulling the other man into a quick hug before asking, "Have you heard anything yet? What's going on now?"
"He’s been taken in, not too long ago and the doc said it shouldn't take too long, as long as there are no complications..." Jensen explained, leading Chris to his car.
Jensen sped along the roads, knowing how desperate Chris was to find out how his boyfriend was doing. They were greeted at the hospital by a nervous looking Misha and Sera, "the doctor came and said that Mrs Padalecki called and confirmed that you and Chris could obtain the details regarding Jared's condition, he wasn't too happy about it but he finally agreed to talk to you two only, you had already left by the time he told us, but someone should be able to talk to you two now," Sera explained.
"Why didn't they do that in the beginning?" Jensen asked, frustrated by all the stress the day had caused.
"They tried, I spoke to them and they said the doctor wouldn't speak to them and then he was already in surgery with Jared, I'm not sure what's going on, but come on, someone should be around somewhere," Sera explained.
Chris didn't bother waiting for the others, simply striding up to the nurses' station and demanding someone working on Jared Padalecki talk to him immediately. A flustered looking nurse quickly nodded and scurried away, mumbling something about finding someone for them. Chris ran his hands through his hair in frustration, something he had been doing a lot of lately, and dropped down into a nearby chair with a sigh. Jensen joined him quickly, throwing his arm around Chris' shoulders, trying to reassure the other man.
"You know Jared is going to be fine right? I mean, it's such a simple surgery, right?" Jensen said, needing some reassurance as well.
"Yeah," Chris nodded absently, "yeah, he'll be fine, he always is," he agreed, smiling at Jensen slightly. Chris knew he had to reassure his long-time friend, it was also his best friend in surgery at the moment, however that was his lover lying there, exposed and vulnerable, his life in the hands of a group of strangers.
Chris didn't keep an eye of how long it took for someone to come and speak with them, but he was glad when the doors separating them and the operating theatre finally opened, revealing someone knew walking through, dressed in her green scrubs, hair hidden by the cap and mask hanging loosely from her neck.
"Family of Mr Padalecki?" she called out, looking over the different groups of people seated around the waiting room, eyes finally landing on Chris and Jensen as they stood up and walked over to her.
"Are you Christian or Jensen?" she asked, looking over her chart.
"Yes, I'm Chris, this is Jensen," Chris said, "please, tell us about Jared, no one has been telling us anything!" Chris begged, crowding the poor woman.
"Of course, I'm Dr Leach, the intern on Mr Padalecki's case, his surgery is going well, we caught it on time, and the appendix was removed before it could burst, right now, Dr Green is finishing up and then Mr Padalecki will be transferred into a private room for recovery. Do you have any questions?" she said, quickly but calmly.
"No, thank you so much for talking to us, it's been so hard to get any information about Jared today, just make sure someone gets us when Jared is settled into his room, we'll talk to his parents," Jensen said.
"Yes, I'm so sorry about the mix up with releasing patients' information, we suggest that you fix up his medical records so that someone local is given the rights to his information, but it’s just hospital protocol," she apologized.
"That’s fine," Jensen dismissed, leading Chris back to the seats. "I'll call his parents now, they are still trying to get a flight over here, but everything looks booked out," Jensen said, leaving Chris alone on the seat, everyone else who was waiting for news on Jared crowding over to Jensen to find out what was going on.
Chris quickly shot Aldis a text, letting Jared’s old co-worker that everything was okay still, and that he would keep him updated. He wasn’t use to having to worry so much about anyone like this. Sure, he had a reputation, one that he wasn’t proud to admit did have some merit towards it, but Jared was one of the first that he truly let himself open up to and let him get close to someone else.
By the time Jensen returned to him, having spoken to Megan about Jared’s condition and their flights, Dr Leach was just entering the waiting room, smiling at the boys and shepherding them through the doors and leading them to Jared’s room.
“Now then, he’s still asleep, we’re waiting for him to wake from the anaesthesia and then we have to go from there, we won’t know much until he wakes up but for now, you can both sit with him, keep it down though,” she said stopping in front of the closed door of Jared’s room.
“Yeah, of course, thank you,” Chris nodded, desperate to get in there and see his boyfriend.
“Of course, have a nurse page me if you have any questions or if Jared wakes up, I’ll be back later though, after my rounds, to check on him,” she added before leaving the men alone.
“Shall we?” Jensen said, hand on the doorhandle, ready to enter the room but waiting for Chris.
Chris could only nod, not trusting his voice at that moment, too scared of what he was going to see to speak. Jensen opened the door but allowed Chris to enter the room first, the older man stopping within a few steps. “Oh Jay,” Chris sighed.
Jared was completely still, hooked up to various machines and looking pale white, something that Chris had never seen before, Jared was never this still. Jensen snapped Chris out of it, Jen, pushing Chris forward so that he could also see his best friend. The two of them took a seat either side of Jared’s bed, Chris leaning over and placing his lips over Jared’s dry ones softly, before taking the lax hand into his own and bringing it up to his cheek. He normally didn’t like public displays of affection, that was Jared’s department, but Jared was hurt and sick, and Jensen was the only around now anyway, he could relax around Jensen.
“Everything is going to be alright now,” Jensen mumbled, talking to no one in particular.
“Yeah, it will be,” Chris agreed, his free hand caressing through Jared’s hair, pushing it out of his eyes, “now all I need is for him to wake up,” he added quietly.
Jared granted his wish only a few hours later, eyes fluttering open and landing on his lover. Chris didn’t bother with words, simply bent over and captured Jared’s chapped lips with his own, confirming for himself that Jared was alive and with him still.
