Title: All In A Day's Work
Pairing: Jared/Chris
Rating: PG (swearing)
Word Count: +4,200
Disclaimer: None of it is true... none
Summary: Two days in Chris' life. Everything seemed to be going wrong for Chris, between the filming his music video clip not running smoothly and then having to film a fight scene for the television show Leverage with a rookie, all he wanted was his Jared.
A/N: written from a prompt by billysgirl5; chris had a hard day filming and all he wanted was Jared who was all the way over in Barcelona doing a con. And then more from a vid about fight scenes which can be found here

First it was a problem with the lighting, then with the sound, then with the lighting and the sound. It seemed as if nothing was going right with his first video clip, the song had been play at least three times already and he was just glad that his fans were being patient with them. They had started early in the morning, Tim dragging cameras around the place getting shot after shot. As it got later the drinks started pouring and more mistakes started getting made, the whole thing had taken hours longer than expected and all he wanted to do was go home and snuggle with his man in bed. He knew that wasn’t going to be possible either though, Jared was miles away, in Barcelona meeting the fans, an empty bed waiting for him in his rented house.

“Good work today man,” Chris said patting Steve’s back as made to leave the bar.

“Where are you going?” Steve asked, placing his guitar back on its stand.

“Home, I have filming in the morning and I need to crash, Eliot’s got another big fight and you know I can’t stuff up during them,” Chris explained, still heading towards the door.

“Hold up, have another beer with me, hang around for a bit and then we’ll head back together,” Steve suggested, checking his phone quickly.

“Nah, I just wanna head home now, you can catch a lift to mine with one of the other guys or something.”

“Okay okay, let me make a call and I’ll meet you in the car, I’ll come with ya,” Steve said turning away from Chris without giving him a chance to argue.

Chris sat in his truck, waiting for Steve to come. He head was resting against the steering wheel as he tried not to fall asleep. The door opened only moments later, a guitar carefully placed in the back seat and the seatbelt clicked in, then they were ready to go.

“Who’d you call?” Chris asked starting the car.

“No one important, come on let’s get out of here,” Steve said resting his head back and closing his eyes, trying to look relaxed. Chris knew him better than that though, he saw his friend check the time and his phone multiple times during the drive and wondered what was going on.

Chris unlocked the door and walked in, turning on the lights as he went through, wanting to get some water from the fridge. “You know where your room is, I’ll see you before I leave in the morning,” Chris called out, hearing Steve walk around the house.

“Thanks man, sure! Good night!” Steve called back offhandedly.

Chris gulped down his water, wondering again what Steve was up to. He shrugged it off, too tired to deal with his friend’s antics and headed to his room. He opened his door, and without turning on his light stripped down before pulling back the bed sheet.

“Steve get out of here man, I ain’t pissed enough for this, you have your bed,” Chris sighed, rubbing at his eyes tiredly, he looked over the body and wondered when Steve had had the time to work out, he was looking good.

“Mm, I hope you two don’t make it a thing to get into each other’s beds whenever you drink enough, I might have to start getting worried or something,” a voice - not Steve’s - mumbled, rough with sleep.

“Huh?” was all Chris managed to get out.

Jared turned over in bed, opening his arms out for Chris to fall into. The older man immediately curled into the warm space, burying his head underneath Jared’s chin, trying to hide away from the world, allowing Jared’s scent to envelop him. Jared wrapped his arms around the shorter man, holding him close and tight, his hand running through Chris’ long hair massaging away the tension.

“It’s okay, I’m here now, you’re alright,” Jared whispered.

“How... How?” Chris mumbled, unable to ask all the questions he wanted to. How did he know? How did he get here? How was he so lucky to have Jared?”

“I knew you had this going on today, I wanted to be here, I managed to leave a day earlier, Jensen and Misha are dealing with all the fans for me. I organised it with Steve, it was close but we managed, he told me you were freaking... why didn’t you tell me?” Jared asked, placing a soothing kiss to the crown of Chris’ head.

“I didn’t want you to think I was weak or something, complaining about a simple music video shoot when we deal with filming every day of the week normally...” Chris mumbled, Steve’s weird behaviour now making sense.

“Don’t think like that Babe, this is a first for you, I know Steve’s done it already but that doesn’t mean anything. Its different from just filming cause like you always say, television is about the lies, this, your music, is the truth laid bare for everyone to see, don’t go making what you do sound like nothing,” Jared said softly.

“Thanks...” Chris yawned. He hadn’t realised it but that exactly what he had needed to hear. “Can we just sleep now?” Chris asked, his eyes still closed.

“Rest now, I’ll still be here in the morning, and for a few days,” Jared whispered, placing another gentle kiss over Chris’ hair.

“I love you Jay,”

“You too.”

Chris had always compared fight scenes to a dance. Each move had to be perfectly choreographed and timed, the pair or even group had to know their own parts as well as the others. If everything went well you had an unbelievable story to print, if something went wrong then the whole thing went wrong, and people more often than not got hurt. Chris got up early the next morning, savouring the feel of Jared around him for just a moment before getting himself into the right head space for the fight scene.

Once showered and fully dressed, Chris returned to his sleeping lover, still obviously jetlagged, and returned one of the many gentle kisses to Jared that he had received the night before. He wrote a quick note to Jared and Steve explaining that he had an early call this morning and that they could meet him on set when they were ready.

Things were already running and crazy on set once he arrived. He was immediately taken to wardrobe and makeup to be turned into Eliot and then taken to the lot where they were shooting the scene. The person he was fighting was some newbie to the television scene, taller than Chris and slightly bigger build, but nothing Chris or Eliot couldn’t handle. They made small talk, waiting for everyone to be ready then started.

He counted it all out in his head, gave his lines perfectly and then started the dance. Forward and back, move around, punch and jab, everything seemed to be going well. Chris knew how to pull his punches back, making them look like they hit, and hit hard, but actually never made contact. The other guy however, wasn’t as good. Chris kept going, feeling each punch and acting his way through it like he was meant to, each time getting more and more irritated.

“And cut!” the director yelled finally.

Chris took a step back, breathing harshly as he tried to regain himself, getting ready for a second take. “Watch how you’re throwing them punches,” he grumbled under his breath, the other guy hearing him fine.

“Watch you mark,” he retaliated annoyed.

Chris grumbled some more, turning around to get a drink. A bottle was thrust in front of him and he accepted it without looking up, “You’re welcome,” Jared chuckled.

“Shit, sorry Jay, thanks,” Chris said before gulping more than half of it down.

“What’s going on? I know you ain’t normally this grumpy,” Jared asked, turning Chris around and rubbing his shoulders.

“The other guy,” Chris started, nodding his head over to where the other actor was standing, “He ain’t pulling back his punches, ain’t even trying, its stuffing me up,” he sighed, “He’s gotta pick me up and throw me down on a mat next, he better fucking do it right,” he grumbled, the massage only slightly soothing.

“Can you talk to your Stunt coordinator? Get him to talk to the other guy?” Jared suggested.

“Nah, he isn’t contracted under us or anything, Kevin can’t really say anything,” Chris sighed.

“Are you sure...?” Jared started.

“I ain’t going to start anything here Jay, I don’t have a big role like you do, I need this and I can’t start causing shit, I’m okay,” Chris sighed.

“Alright alright, don’t get shitty with me, I just don’t want to see you get hurt Babe,” Jared mumbled, his lips right next to Chris’ ear.

“I know, but I’ll be okay,” Chris said, he leaned back into Jared’s broad chest, just for a moment and let Jared hold him before stepping out of the embrace and getting ready for the next take.

Everything seemed to be going well at first, the punches weren’t as hard and Chris thought just for a moment that the other guy had taken his advice. But all that changed in an instant. Instead of faking left, the guy faked right, forcing Chris back in the wrong directing, straight into some wooden creates, Chris was then lifted without warning and thrown down just as it said in the script, however instead of landing on a mat his fall was cushioned by the wooden props.

Chris cried out in pain as the wooden boxed splintered underneath his weight. He wasn’t sure what happened next but all of a sudden there were people surrounding him trying to get his attention. A voice boomed out over all the others, immediately settling everyone else down.

“Give him some fucking room!” Jared seethed, pushing his way through the small crowd that had formed around Chris. “Don’t move man, the medics are on their way now, can you tell me what hurts the most?” Jared asked, use to these kinds of questions.

Chris managed another groan in pain, “J-Jay?” he all but whimpered.

“Right here Chris, right here,” Jared reassured, grabbing onto Chris’ hand and squeezing tight.

The medics came not long after, forcing everyone other than Jared back as they worked to get Chris in a neck brace and onto a back board. “We’re going to take him in just to be safe, he’s got some puncture wounds and we need to make sure everything gets cleared properly,” a female medic explained.

“Can I come with you?” Jared asked, his hand still twisted in Chris’s.

“There won’t be any room, I’m sorry sir,” she said shaking her head.

Jared ran alongside Chris and helped the two medics get him into the ambulance bus, not leaving until he had explained to Chris exactly what was happening and that he would see him soon. With one last kiss, Jared backed out of the ambulance, allowing the woman to get in and do her job. He sighed as he shut the door, banging on it twice to signal that it was closed before watching the bus drive off with his lover inside, sirens wailing.

Jared marched back to the scene of the accident. “Someone better find out what the fuck went wrong, and there better be hell to pay,” Jared threatened. He normally didn’t get like this, but when it concerned his family or friends, he got scary protective.

“We’re already looking over the dailies, trying to see what went wrong,” someone commented, Jared tried to see where it came from but didn’t know anyone here. “Where’s that other guy? The one who was fighting with Chris? Chris mentioned that he wasn’t sticking to the plan properly and that guy seemed to have it in for him or something,” Jared mentioned.

“He ran as soon as Chris was down, someone’s already off to get him,” another voice replied.

Jared simply nodded, his eyes met with Steve’s and with a simple nod of the head both of them were headed to the cars, Aldis and Beth not far behind, having only just heard about what happened. They all loaded into one car and took off towards the hospital, Jared following Aldis’ directions.

The car was quickly parked once they arrived, and the small group immediately rushed in, Jared approaching the desk with everyone else standing behind him. “Did a guy called Christian Kane arrive?” Jared asked, not bothering with any niceties.

“One moment,” the small nurse said, clicking away at her computer, “it says here he arrived about two minutes ago and went up to an exam room straight away,” she replied.

“Can I see him?” Jared asked.

“Right now its family only...”

“I’m his boyfriend,” Jared responded immediately, “Uh and these are his siblings and cousin,” Jared added on as a second thought, hoping no one would question Aldis’ relationship.

The nurse looked Jared and the group over, weighing up what Jared had just said, “Exam room four, upstairs and to the right when you come out of the elevator, the doctor should be in with him now, so I’d recommend only one of you go in first,” she said, waving her hand towards the elevator.

“Thank you so much,” Jared said, looking as if he could kiss the nurse.

The four of them rushed towards the lift and got in, impatiently waiting for it to make its way up one level before rushing out and down the hall. Jared stopped and looked at the other three, he doubted that anyone would argue with him wanting to go inside, but he still had to be sure.

“Get in there,” Steve said, the others nodding with him, “let him know we are all here for him,” he added, taking a seat just outside the room.

Jared breathed out a sigh of relief, knocking on the door before pushing it open slightly. He poked his head in and saw the doctor working over Chris’ back, the older man wincing in pain every time the doc moved in. His back was splattered with different shades of blue and purple, open red wounds sliced all over, it was painful to look at, let alone have to deal with.

“What do you want young man?” the doctor asked, only sparing Jared a quick glance before returning to his work.

“I’m Chris’ partner, the nurse said I could come in?” he asked.

“Come in, come in, I’m just trying to remove all the splinters before I start suturing him up,” the doctor said, nodding towards the chair that stood near Chris’ head.

Jared walked in and sat down, grasping Chris’ hand in his own once more, his free hand immediately coming up and raking through Chris’ long sweaty hair. He mumbled soft reassurances to Chris, pulling his hand back and looking at it in horror when it came away red.

“Doc? Did you see this?” Jared asked, his hand shaking.

The doctor looked up, his thick lenses over his eyes would have made Jared laugh in most situations but not this one. “I examined his head previously, there are a few open wounds there, best not to touch them or else you risk infection, don’t worry, head wounds always bleed a lot,” the doctor commented.

Jared nodded slightly, bending down and kissing Chris firmly on the lips, his hand awkwardly resting on his lap. They stayed like that for what had to have been at least an hour, neither one of them talking as the doctor slowly and meticulously pulled out each and every splinter in Chris’ back. It hurt Jared to watch silently as Chris winced at every touch, unable to take the pain away from his lover. He had a local anaesthetic put into his back in several places, but it obviously wasn’t making much of a difference.

“You’re okay Babe, you’re okay,” Jared started whispering, his thumb lovingly stroking over Chris’ slightly bruised knuckles

“And that should be it, you’ll have to stay on your stomach for a while still and we’ll be watching you tonight for any signs of infection and concussion, but I suspect you’ll be right to go back home tomorrow. Now, no strenuous activity for the next week, if you pull any of your stitches you will have to come back and get them redone. Have a nurse call me if you are feeling any sharp pains or for anything at all, okay?” the doctor said, pulling his latex gloves off and standing up.

“Thank you doc, can I have the others come in?” Jared asked, talking for Chris who was still looking out of it.

“As long as you all stay quiet, I don’t see there being too much of a problem, he needs his rest now,” the doctor nodded before leaving the room.

Jared bent down and kissed Chris on the lips now that they were alone, “I’ll be right back Chris, I’m getting the others to come in,” Jared said in a soft voice, not expecting Chris to respond.

Jared quickly got up and called the others in, warning them to keep it down because Chris was resting. One by one, Steve, Aldis and Beth walked into Chris’ room, looking the resting man over before settling down in the chairs around the bed.

“How’s he doing?” Steve asked in a near whisper.

“As expected I guess, doc seemed to have gotten all the splinters out of his back, stitched him up good, and yeah, I think we’re lucky it wasn’t anything serious,” Jared answered, “any word from the set?” Jared asked.

“Yeah, Joe, the guy Chris was fighting, is getting his ass handed to him, they re-watched the dailies and realised he wasn’t pulling back his punches and then got it wrong with the cues, from what you said about the disagreement they seemed to have had they think it wasn’t just a simple mistake but they won’t ever really know,” Beth answered quickly and easily.

“Jared what’s going on with your hand?” Steve asked finally noticing the blood.

Jared looked down and started at the blood that had dried on his palm, he didn’t realise it but it itched and smelt. His hand started shaking as he remembered what it was. “It’s his blood...” Jared said, his voice barely audible.

Steve stood and wrapped an arm around Jared’s shoulders and carefully tugged the younger man up with his other hand, “come on Jay, let’s get you cleaned up,” Steve said, pulling him towards the connecting bathroom.

“But... but Chris...” Jared argued weakly, allowing himself to be pulled along. Steve washed Jared’s hands for him, completely washing off all of signs of the red substance, drying them as well before returning to Chris’ room. “I’m back Chris, I’m here,” Jared whispered, kissing Chris’ forehead to let him know he was back.

“J-Jay...” came a moan from Jared’s side.

Jared almost jumped out of his chair, “Chris? Babe are you okay?” Jared asked immediately crouching down and looking into Chris’ eyes that were just barely open.

“Hurts,” Chris mumbled, his hand going out for Jared’s.

“You’re okay, I’ll see if we can get you something more for your back okay? Tomorrow we’ll get you home and comfortable and then you can rest,” Jared said softly, his free hand coming up to cup Chris’ face, pushing some hair off his face.

“I wanna go home now,” Chris complained.

“Can’t Babe, not until we know you aren’t at risk of any infections,” Jared said. “The other guys are here, you feel up to talking to them for a bit?” Jared asked.

Chris groaned slightly, nodding in agreement. His eyes were already drooping and it was obvious that he wasn’t going to stay awake for much longer. Jared moved back slightly, allowing the other three to approach and listened as Chris’ friends spoke to him, asking him to get better and telling him that everything was going to be alright.

After a while, long after Chris had fallen asleep, Steve, Aldis and Beth decided to leave. Jared deciding to stay with Chris for the night, hopefully by morning they would know if he could take Chris home or not and they could go from there. Jared bid everyone farewell, promising to update them when he had more news, and settled back into his chair for a long night, his hand still firmly grasped with Chris’.

The next morning, Jared woke with a crick in his neck. Chris was also awake, still on his stomach and staring at Jared. “How you feeling?” Jared asked, blinking out the sleep from his eyes.

“Been better,” he croaked, a crooked smile gracing his lips.

Jared smiled slightly, not liking the fact that Chris seemed to still be in pain, he knew his lover, Chris was hiding how much pain he was actually feeling. “The doc should be coming in soon, then we can see about getting you home,” Jared said, carefully raking his fingers through Chris’ hair, making sure not to scrape over any of the wounds towards the back of his scalp.

They sat together and spoke softly, waiting for the doctor to arrive. He did barely half an hour later, checking Chris’ back for any signs of infection before talking to the two of them.

“Well boys, everything is looking good, you’re lucky this time, it wasn’t too serious, but it very well could have been,” the doctor started, “I’ll let you go home today, but you need to be on full bed rest for the next few days at least, no work for at least a week, until your back is fully healed, the stitches can come out at the end of the week,” he explained, “You can apply this ointment I’ll prescribe to his back twice a day, it will help with the healing process, and that’s it really,” he told Jared, “any other questions?” he asked.

“No, thank you so much Doc,” Jared said shaking his hand.

“No problems, have a good day boys,” the doctor said, leaving the room.

Chris signed his release forms not long after the doctor’s visit, and in Jared’s large hoodie, he was finally able to go home. Jared loved the sight of Chris in his oversized hoodie, the whole thing engulfed the smaller man making him look smaller still and somewhat vulnerable. The sleeves ran far too long down his arms and the rest practically hung off him like a dress, but Chris simply pulled up the sleeves and put his hands in the top’s pockets to hold it up, only wincing slightly as the rough fabric brushed over his tender back.

The drive home was difficult, Chris couldn’t lean back into the seat and rest like he wanted to. he held himself stiff and upright, tensing up whenever the car went over a bump or dent in the road. “Nearly there,” Jared kept repeating each time he saw Chris wince, hoping to comfort him even slightly, one of his large hands resting on Chris’ thigh, squeezing in reassurance.

It’s only Steve that greets them at the front door when they finally arrive home, and immediately Jared ushers Chris back into bed. Steve having already arranged the pillows so both Chris and Jared could sleep comfortably.

“Thanks man,” Chris nodded, walking past Steve and collapsing face first into the bed, not even bothering to attempt to take his shoes or other clothes off.

Jared knelt down without word and unlaced Chris’ (or were they Eliot’s?) boots and took them off, followed by the tight fitting jeans. Chris mumbled his thanks, exhaustion already taking over him, pulling him back into sleep.

“I’m going to stay here with him, are you okay?” Jared asked Steve once he had Chris settled in.

“I could keep you company,” Steve shrugged, not really wanting to leave either one of them alone.

Jared agreed and the three of them quickly found themselves settled into the large bed together, the television at the foot of the bed turned on with the volume down low. As soon as Jared had lay down in bed, his back propped up against the headboard, Chris had flung an arm over his legs and nestled his face into Jared’s stomach, snuffling slightly before calming down once more. Jared’s response was immediate, his hand came up and started brushing through Chris’ hair, soothing the older man just how he liked it without word.

Steve watched the whole exchange with interest. He knew from the start that the two of them made a good match, even though there were a lot of people that doubted their relationship, and it was during moments like these that proved it. Not because Chris was sick or injured, but because Jared knew instinctively what Chris wanted and needed and gave it to the other man without a second’s thought, Chris always doing the same.

The next week was going to be hard on all of them, Jared and Chris especially, but Steve knew that they’d get through it. Looking after Chris wasn’t going to be a problem for Jared, not with the love he had for the older man. And with that thought, Steve relaxed and focused on the mind numbing television programme that was playing.
