One of my good friends keeps swearing I'll love them and telling me I have to read them, but I dunno. I've heard lots about them and have picked the first one up at the bookstore a few times and flipped through it, but it never grabs me enough to make me actually want to buy it. I like both historical fiction and fantasy (although more urban fantasy than sword and sorcery) so I'm not sure what's putting me off.
I don't know either. The very beginning of the first book is an odd little scene where you have no idea what's going on or who these people are and it totally grabbed me. I had "can't put this down" the worst I've ever had it through the first four books (had to wait for the fifth to come out). So, if it doesn't grab it might not be for you. Still, I can't imagine someone with your discernment not liking them. : )
I read them all (that are available) one after another. Some of them I loved, some I liked, some I kind of WTFed at. The fifth book really felt like he was losing the plot. My husband loved the first, enjoyed the second, and after the third decided he was done with them.
I read and liked the first three, occasional misogyny and the author's male gaze aside. The fourth and the fifth drag on and on and on. I'll probably skim the rest of the series.
