Two million credits. That was the bounty currently posted for the retrieval of Logan Echolls. Logan knew this as it seemed to have been talked about on every news program on the planet, and, well, because the bounty hunter who'd found him that morning had told him so ( Read more... )

It was weird that Aaron hadn't sent Joe away, but he'd barely reacted to his arrival and had actually followed Joe down the hall and unlocked Logan's bedroom. They had no interaction beyond that, not that Joe much gave a fuck. He wasn't there for Aaron and he sure as shit wasn't interested in him.

All he did when Aaron unlocked the door was push it open and head inside, closing the door behind him and leaning against it heavily. "Well, you're in a fucking bind," he said simply.

Looking up, Logan was more than a little surprised to see Joe. Not just because he was amazed Aaron was letting him have visitors, but because he sort of figured the bounty hunter wouldn't risk coming to see him or, you know, waste his time.

"Yeah, I'd noticed," he replied quietly.

Joe surveyed the room quickly, figuring the window wasn't going to open. Aaron seemed distracted, but he also seemed smart enough to make sure the window wouldn't be opening again. "I hear he's spinning a kidnapping tale," Joe added a moment later, still leaning against the door with a small smile. "Pretty fucking funny, all things considered."

Logan laughed quietly, even though he was struggling to find humor in anything at the moment. "Guess he figured he wouldn't get much sympathy if he said I ran away because I was sick of having the shit beat out of me. Guess he didn't recognize you, huh?"

It's late. Almost dark by the time I make it onto the Echolls' property. It's one of the bigger homes in Tifton, looming in that obnoxiously self important kind of way, tucked back away from the street and prying eyes. I'm a little wary of just knocking on the door, but I also don't feel like climbing up to the second floor and peaking in windows 'til I find Logan's.

I was pretty sure the death glare I shoot Logan's father when he opens the door'd get me kicked out on my ass, but instead he herds me inside, all but shoving me -- politely -- into Logan's room and shutting the door behind me.

"Fucking... What happened?"

Logan scowled a little, even as he moved over to give Neil room to join him on the bed. "Fucking bounty hunter. One minute I'm leaving Loretta's, the next some asshole has me up against a wall."

The guy had been a real prick as well, as much a perv as he was violent.

"Where the hell have you been? I tried calling you the other day and I dialed your com about fifty times after dad locked me in here. Wendy looked like she was gonna skin me if I called again."

"Long story," I mutter, flopping over next to him with a sigh, "I didn't know you called. I been... busy, I guess. I came as soon as I heard, they been talking 'bout it on the news all day."

"You been with that guy again?" Logan asked, frowning, ignoring everything else Neil said.
