Iris hadn't been at the mansion long before she discovered her favorite part about it - the wide open sky, and lack of secondary light sources that made it an ideal location for stargazing. So she had ventured out on this particular night with the blanket from her room, which she had spread out on the lawn. She laid back, closed her eyes, and concentrated on the memory of her grandfather, the only thing she'd found could help her call her powers up to the surface. It always made her tear up a little, but when she opened her eyes again, she was rewarded with a view of the night sky unlike anything the normal human eye could perceive ( ... )

Raven was startled to see someone else out at this time of night, and was relieved that she had chosen to venture out in her disguise as opposed to her natural form. She hadn’t expected to see anyone else, and while she hadn’t planned on company... well, it was all right. Anything to keep me from thinking about the library... Hell, having someone else to talk to might work better than walking by herself ever could. And it’s not like it was going anywhere.

It was harder to tell who it was in the darkness, and she altered her path to take her towards them. When she got closer she recognized the other woman seated on the blanket. Iris, she thought her name was. She returned the friendly wave with a wave of her own.

“What brings you out this time of night?” she asked, smiling.

"The view," Iris said, motioning for Raven to join her on the blanket. She blinked, letting her powers fade away so that she could see normally, more for her own comfort than anything else. Non-visible wavelengths were all good and fun, but trying to hold a conversation with someone while they looked like a film negative was slightly distracting.

"The sky is beautiful out here," she said with a small smile. "It reminds me of going to the country back home, when I was younger. No bright city lights or anything. You must have loved growing up here."

Raven smiled, taking a seat beside Iris on the blanket and glancing up at the sky for a moment before returning her attention to the woman next to her.

“I did,” she replied softly. It had been such a change when she first arrived. Charles had quite easily turned her life upside down; for the better, of course. Not only had he given her a roof over her head... but he’d made it a home, as well. “I used to sneak out, in the beginning, and just sit, staring at the sky. I’d never really paid it attention before; I couldn’t afford to... but here it was so... beautiful.”

Blaze was getting used to the idea of other people being around, people she didn't have to hide from. She was still shy and had barely talked to anyone, but that the other people were there bothered her less.

Far more difficult to get used to was... well, having a roof over her head. Before she'd been found, the girl had more or less rejected humans and spent her time outside, even sleeping there most of the time. Oh she tried falling asleep in her room, but earlier in the night she had given it up as a lost cause and slipped outside with her blanket and her cat, and had curled up under a tree. She was only drifting when Raven was coming near, so she felt a presence and woke fully. Sitting up she held the blanket around herself, watching curiously to see who else was out so late.

I guess there’s more people up than I expected, Raven thought wryly, catching sight of a figure sitting beneath a tree. It was rather amusing, and she supposed she might as well say hello on her way. Making her way towards the figure beneath the tree, she offered a friendly smile once she was close enough to see them clearly.

“Hey.”

Her return smile was a litle shy. "Hi. Didn't think anyone'd be out this late..." Her voice sounds a bit sleepy, possibly betraying that until a moment ago while she was out, she hadn't been up.

Raven shrugged. “Couldn’t sleep.” She tilted her head slightly. Had she been sleeping underneath that tree? After a moment’s consideration, she decided it didn't matter. If the other girl was more comfortable sleeping outside, that was groovy.

Raven mentally winced, though she was more amused at her word choice than anything. Charles is rubbing off on me. Next I’ll be picking up boys in bars with horrible pick-up lines.
