World Wide Word

Apologies for the lack of good blogging - I've been working on re-vamping and updating my web site.  I am sick to death of the old template, so I'm giving it a more modern look (and eliminating the big white gap on the right side of the screen that makes me want to kill myself out of embarrassment every time I look at it).

Updates soon.  I don't ( Read more... )

And what would I do with one?

Honestly, I have thought about doing one, but I'm just so darn lazy.

However, I have thought about doing a woodworking forum with Fin along the lines of the armor archive. No egos the size of Montana allowed and all that.

But then the laziness takes hold again.

There already is a medieval woodworking forum....but I'm too lazy to go find its formal name....

You mean the Yahoo group? I checked a couple of them out and they were almost entirely about how to cover up non-period stuff or how to make stuff that looks period if you stand WAY back and squint and there's some smoke in the way, and you're wearing an eyepatch.

That and the other side of it was there always seems to be a couple of assholes who bludgeon people with the knowledge they have (and in some cases don't have). Bah.

I love doing up websites... now to just keep them updated :s Never actually got around to doing one of strictly SCA-interest... again, been thinking about it, persona-wise... just where to start...

LLT and I have one (www.otcreations.com) but I haven't done the work to put anything on it. Part of that what WAS on it was SCA resumes for me, LLT and frederich. While it was on my ex sig. o's server there were some issues (it was a wiki and no backups were apparently made). The files that died were the two that I'd put the most work into - my resume and LLT's. So now I have to go back and recreate everything and I just haven't bothered.

Of course I probably would care more if it were more than just a list of the things we've done or if I knew enough to make it "pretty".

I have had a website for some time. It helps me share what I have learnt or tried out (since I live away from the more populated Eastern States). It makes me get off my butt and finish things. It helps me clarify my thoughts. I also love checking out how others have intepretted designs and research.
:)
Interesting hearing your thoughts on this one with regards to the SCA. As I have been told, several times, that it was almost a death nell for any chance at a Laurel in the SCA, at least in Lochac.
Still, having one outweighs the disadvantages, I feel.

*Having* a website would be a death knell for a laurel? Why?

different people have differing reasons for this... apparently...
Some say *they* just 'don't like them', some say "they want to see it in person only", some apparently think it is tacky.

I am unsure how many think this way. But I was told as recently as early this year.I was just told that is the way it is.
I did not pursue it further. Because, honestly, if that was the only reason someone did not get the award, I would be dissapointed. I would have thought thata candidate's work and abilities were more important than whether they had a website or were on LJ?
yes, I am probably niave...

Okay, that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I'm sorry you have to put up with that idiocy. Mind you - is that Laurels telling you this (ones you can trust), or is this other people telling you what "They" don't like?

Either way, it's idiotic. If Museums have no problem with showing their stuff on the web, then we shouldn't either. >:(

For me, the ability to look at a candidate’s website is often the difference between an abstain, or a yes/no. I simply don’t trust commentary all that much, unless I really know and trust the commenter.

Live Journal can be used and abused as a quick and dirty way to make a website. If you can put pictures and links into posts, you’re golden. Make a post for each project you have. Then make a top level post that gives your overview, and links the topic or subject posts. Insta website, right there!

Lovingly disagree,

Throwing up lots of links and pictures is Hollow Research. Posting Commentary about what YOU interpret from the material shows skills at interpretation of that material.

No Laurel for being a Google-Meister. ;)

That's not what I said.

Create a post for your Italian Table, describing your process, and include pictures.
Create a post for your Glasonbury chair.
Create a post for your pattens.

Create one main post, and future date it so that it always stays on top. Include a brief blurb about who you are and contact info. That's your "home" page. Put links on that to all of your project pages.
