your s.lucia sounds more like a pagan tradition which like many was covered with a patina of cristian religion in order to keep it up, while our one is mainly based on the christian martyrdom of s.lucia -here you can see a bit the reliquiary tomb... sorry the text is in italian but it basically tells about the tradition of leaving letters asking for gifts on the tomb of the saint.
While ours probably is more interesting (only for children in Lombardia though) as it's basically a pre-christmas, you get the best of the two when it comes to decorations and sights.... ^_^
