Ghanima's Office [9.06]

Sep 07, 2009 09:29

Ghanima was in her office after class today, pour over various religious texts. Just because she knew most of them by heart didn't mean that there wasn't something she'd missed earlier.

Any popcorn or giggling that might be going on, well, that was something else altogether. Ghanima had an odd sense of humor.

Azula decided to visit Professor Atreides before class and stopped before her office. She reached out at the door and knocked.

"Come in," Ghanima called, placing a marker in her book.

"Professor Atreides," Azula greeted then added, placing her right fist just below her left palm. "Sifu."

"Princess," Ghanima acknowledged, waving her in. "How does today find you?"

Leto had told her that she needed to speak with Lady Ghanima -- and how strange, that he was Leto-just-Leto to her but that she was Lady Ghanima, though they were twins -- though perhaps it wasn't so strange, considering that she was a teacher and he was ... whatever Leto was, to her -- and now Alice had lost her train of thought. Yes. She needed to speak with Lady Ghanima, and she couldn't pretend not to be nervous as her hands twisted against one another. She would have had them bunched in her pinafore, had she been wearing it; one more reason that reasonable, practical clothes were sometimes unpleasant.

She knocked on the open door, willing herself not to fidget.

"Come in," Ghanima called, looking up from her current text. "Miss Liddell. Do not lurk in doorways, when I have perfectly good lemondrops on my desk."

"Thank you," Alice said, bobbing out a quick curtsy. Nearly reflexive, at this point; she couldn't manage to resist the impulse.

She walked to the nearest chair, resting a hand on its back, unsure if it was presumptuous to plop herself in it if Lady Ghanima might be busy with other matters. She was overthinking this. Perhaps she hadn't realized how important this was until now.

"I wished to speak with you, if I'm not interrupting. Though I might partake in some of your lemon drops, since you've kindly offered them."

"My door is always open for you, Alice," Ghanima replied, tilting her head with a bemused smile. Yes, someone had most likely been talking with Leto, then. "And an interruption from classwork is always welcome."

A lot had been going on lately, and Dinah kind of felt like she should check in with Ghanima. A reality-check if nothing else. Hmm. And showing off... She left her shoes in the hallway, stepped up a couple inches above the floor, and tried to sneak in as far as possible. No footsteps!

Which didn't mean she was noiseless, but hey.

Not noiseless, no. There was still breathing, and the rustle of clothing as she moved, and Ghanima resisted the urge to hit herself with her book. Now who had she caught? No footsteps, soooooo...

"Karla-Dinah-Merlin, or whatever creature you are, if you give me a heart-attack, I shall give you detention for the rest of the week," she said merrily, continuing to take notes in the margins of her pages.

A small thump as Dinah hit ground again, looking sheepish as she went back to grab her shoes. "I'm getting better! I can walk the whole hallway without touching the floor now. Even if I can't get very high."

"And how much of your concentration does it take?" Ghanima inquired. Most likely a lot, considering that Dinah's dismount had not been the most graceful, judging by the thumping sound.

Joining the parade of people who thought Ghanima needed bothering Karla stood outside of Lady Ghanima's door, trying not to look as uncomfortable and as self-conscious as she felt. She wasn't sure if this was the best place to be right now, but she needed help, and Ghanima was the closest thing she had to a full-grown Healer or Black Widow available to her. And while part of her was decidedly sulky about the notion of needing help, she knew when she was over her head, and she was not about to jeopardize a patient's treatment because she was feeling proud.

"Lady Ghanima?" she called, knocking lightly on the door. "May I come in?"

"Come in, Karla," Ghanima replied, looking up. "What can I do for you?"

Karla slipped inside, sitting down in front of Ghanima's desk. "I was hoping you could give me some advice," she said, hesitantly. "I'm facing a situation I've never had to deal with before and I'm unsure how to procede. You may not know, either, but...you were the best person I could think to go to."

She looked at her hands, trying to think of the most polite way to ask her next question. "What do you know about actually overcoming addiction?"

And winced. Whatever the most polite way was, that probably hadn't been it.

"Overcoming it? It is possible for many people," Ghanima said, blinking in surprise. "Although there are those of us who can never overcome our addictions. For me to cease taking the Spice would result in death, there is no way around it."

"But it is more-than possible, for the majority of addictions."
