So... we didn't get a shot of the night sky...

But there were intersting sky shots.

Fire bad, cloud pretty? )

Me too! Although the closest we ever got to being in personal danger was when we were escorted to the cabin to retrieve our things. The fire engine and firefighters standing by (for the cabin, not us) really brought home the point.

In retrospect, I wonder if they were required to be there in case one of us fainted from the heat or smoke.

I thought about that at the time, but it was their lack of interest in amy of us and their total concentration in watching the fire area that led me to think that if they were there for us, it was incidental. That and they were firefighters with a fire engine and not EMTs/paramedics with a rescue unit.

The TV picture that got to me most was fire high on the mountain peak on which we could clearly see snow from the cabin all weekend. By the time I saw it I knew you all had your possessions, but it was a sign that the people who live there all the time with their horses and cattle and buffalo do sometimes pay a price for all that beauty.

They think the blaze started from a campfire.

I'm worried about that buffalo. There was smoke and ash all over the place at the cabin. I suppose some animals will die of smoke inhalation.

There's also an animal sanctuary off Rte. 89 not far south of the cabin. (I think it's this one, but I don't remember the name for sure & the site doesn't give an address for their Arizona facility.) I wondered if the animals were OK & looked for their website, but the most recent entry in their blog is about a fire in September of last year. Maybe the situation is keeping them too busy to post about it.

Forces of nature in action always seem to have that inherent beauty, but in a way we wish we'd never have to see.

Beautiful but really scary. So glad everyone's stuff is OK--hope the fire is contained soon.

At least the winds are supposed to die down, which will help the fire-fighting effort immensely.

It was an...interesting...day. But it all ended well -- for us, anyway.
