As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest X-Men!}'>
At 5am the troops were gathered, all looking tied and anxious and all too aware that this was it... this might be the battle they'd trained for - one of many of course, but the Shadow King had always been their biggest threat - their last battle.
Theirs was not to wonder why, but theirs was just to do or die... preferably not die, all things considered, but when facing the Shadow King and his forces, one never knew.
Of course nobody knew if the Shadow King would really be there, at that battlefield, wherever it was.
Nobody knew. Everyone feared.
They gathered in the Great Hall as dawn began to break, and they listened.
"Good morning. Students. X-Men.
Today is the day that every day before now has led to. The day in which you will be waging the largest war so far in the history of mutantkind.
Mutantkind... that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We remain, as a species, consumed by our petty differences, by our ideological stance in that never ending battle with the homo sapiens who wish to see us ground down into the dust.
There can be no chance for our Brothers and Sisters to be united in our common interest until the Shadow King is dead, and his legions vanquished.
Perhaps it is cruel fate that these past days our friends have been taken by the Guthrie clan, and our hand has been forced long before I ever believed the due time had arrived, but on this day of days, you will once again be fighting for our freedom, and for each other, and more than that.
Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from complete annihilation. We fight alongside each other today for our right to live, to exist at all, because mark my words - the Shadow King seeks a power beyond comprehension, and if we fall today and do not stand up and make ourselves heard, everything we hold dear will be as the dust the humans wish we were.
And should we win the day, I can tell you that our fight will not be over... but we will be stronger, better, and we will Live!
I refuse to ever submit to the rule of anyone... be it Humanity, or the Shadow King!
We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish from all memory without a fight. We're going to live on, we're going to survive!"
His tired anxious worried students had become progressively more worked up as Erik continued, rousing them from their slumber with words of war.
There would need to be words of planning, of forethought too, but every General knew that the most important words to ever be said were the ones that instilled fire in the belly and the will to live.
They had to live... because if they didn't, if Charles won, then all of this would have been for nothing. They had to.
