Title: Death by Snowball Author: ArtemisPrime Summary: a cold cave and a blizzard might be exciting to some people. McKay was not one of them. Spoilers: okay Rating: PG-13 (for language and situations)
Completely random interjection here in the midst of reading, but I just spoke on the phone with someone yesterday about this happening. Can't remember where in the midwest, but it was the first time I'd heard of it happening and I really wished I'd been able to see it.
We've had them where I am, too. It really is a cool thing to see and the rumble is muffled a little by the snow. And you gotta love coincidences like this :)
Okay, I'm still reading, but this jumped out at me:
Resting McKay’s head back down, the Colonel pulled out the smaller emergency tourniquet and wrapped it around the wound.
You can't tourniquet a head wound, and even if you could, you wouldn't tourniquet a wound that has stopped bleeding. A tourniquet is an emergency device that stops excessive bleeding in an extremity by compressing the blood vessels, usually a cloth-and-stick combo where you wrap the cloth around the extremity closer to the body than the wound, and then tighten it by turning the stick (hence the name). I'm pretty sure you meant something more like a pressure bandage?
Sorry. My medical knowledge is limited to basic First Aid/CPR/swimming that I've done over the years. Mostly, I was thinking of the bandage and wraps that Sheppard used in "The Defiant One" when he was nicked in the arm. I also figured that he would want to try to keep the wound as clear of debris as he could and that the bandage/strap thing would work best. Sorry about that.
This was fantastic. I found it yesterday while at work, made it halfway through and didn't want to close it to go home cuz I was afraid I'd never find it again... I'm new to the LJ universe. lol BUT I found it again today and finally was able to finish it throughout a ton of distractions.
A FAVORITE!! From the very beginning paragraphs I was hooked by the nose. I enjoyed every word of dialogue and every action. As an EMT I too saw the mistake with the "tourniquet" but since we're not all medical professionals I was able to look past it, knowing what you meant. (like the victim board, is called a backboard or a spinal board, but I still knew what you meant and I like the new nickname for it)
Anyway....... AWESOME FUN, Soooo in character for everyone, great lighthearted entertainment with the sense of drama and hurt/comfort that I personally love. PERFECT! That's my take on this one. Thank you for sharing it. - JS
You've made me grin. Thansk for that. This is a fandom that I am nervous about writing in (not like Firefly...sigh...). I was reading another story that used the phrase "field dressing"...*headdesk*.
Yes, field dressing is the proper term for what John and the team use on the show, it's a bandage and dressing in a single unit and they are fantastic. A little cumbersome to work with since it unfolds haphazardly instead of rolling out like gauze bandages do, but they do the job
( ... )
Thank-you. If you're interested in more SGA fic, check out stargateficrec. People search around and find the best SG fic out there, both SG-1 and SGA. There have been some absolutely fantastic stories posted. As well, I am a huge fan of friendshipper and her story "Long Road Home" is likely my personal favourite. Hope these help in your SGA obsession :)
