Day 61, later morning; Athosian emcampment, Attn: Radek, Athosians [F]

"Carus," Selen spoke quietly, "it is time. You are certain you wish to submit to this? If you do not wish this, some other punishment could be given." The decision had been difficult and he wanted to be certain Radek didn't feel forced into doing this.

Radek swallowed uncertainly as Selen, his Alpha, gave him one more chance to get out of the whipping he himself had chosen. This wasn't to say that he wasn't terrified; Radek did not think that he had ever faced anything he dreaded so much... but no, that wasn't quite true. He had never faced any physical ordeal such as this, but there were worse things, non-physical things, that Radek had dreaded in his life, far more than this.

For some days, as he had lain recovering from the injuries that he had sustained in his last, disastrous mission for the communist Czechoslovakian government, he'd had a real fear that he might be committed to a mental institution, and there were very few things anyone in his old country feared more. It would have almost certainly amounted to a life sentence, in the most unspeakable of conditions, and death would have decidedly been preferable. What he faced now would be over in minutes, though the pain might linger for days, and the healing take some time, there would be healing, and that was the ( ... )

"I will be with you," Selen answered simply, taking Radek's hand. What Radek was to endure would be difficult for him to see, and part of him wished he could take the punishment himself. "Come now."

They stepped out of the tent. The people around them turned their eyes away, as was traditional for those going out to be punished. When Radek returned, he would be welcomed warmly and coddled while he recovered. It was the way of his people.

They walked through the encampment, holding hands, until they arrived at the edge of the camp and followed the path out to the punishment area that had been set up. They were early because Selen wanted to give Radek the chance to familiarise himself with the way things were set up. "How may I calm you, carus?" Selen asked.

Radek glanced around the recently cleared area, unremarkable save for the sturdy post set at the center. It was perhaps two meters in height and short length of chain hung from the top, ending in a larger ring. Radek knew he would soon be bound there and could not help the shudder that passed through him.

"Just..." he said, pressing close to his Alpha, clutching at his hand. :Just stay close... and tell me that things will be better, when it is over."

Selen leaned down and took his lover's mouth in a gentle kiss. "I believe things will be better when it is over, my carus. And I will be as close as I can for the whole time."

Charin arrived with a kit of healing supplies, Marran by her side. While Belem was good with a whip and was not expected to break the skin, it sometimes happened that someone upon the post would move at the wrong moment, causing the whip to land wrong and cut into already tender flesh ( ... )
