"Carus," Selen spoke quietly, "it is time. You are certain you wish to submit to this? If you do not wish this, some other punishment could be given." The decision had been difficult and he wanted to be certain Radek didn't feel forced into doing this.

For some days, as he had lain recovering from the injuries that he had sustained in his last, disastrous mission for the communist Czechoslovakian government, he'd had a real fear that he might be committed to a mental institution, and there were very few things anyone in his old country feared more. They stepped out of the tent. The people around them turned their eyes away, as was traditional for those going out to be punished. When Radek returned, he would be welcomed warmly and coddled while he recovered. It was the way of his people.
They walked through the encampment, holding hands, until they arrived at the edge of the camp and followed the path out to the punishment area that had been set up. They were early because Selen wanted to give Radek the chance to familiarise himself with the way things were set up. "How may I calm you, carus?" Selen asked.
