Catching Carson with Jackson had put a serious dampener on Rodney's mood. Carson had looked awfully terrible, and it upset him that there was nothing he could do. He'd trudged back to the lab, trying to get some paperwork done. He couldn't really focus, and then he found Sheppard's email, asking him to show up at 5 am. He was smart enough to ( Read more... )

John tipped back the bottle and took another long swallow, welcoming the burn in his throat, the heat in his body, the slowing of his thoughts. He needed to not think. Not think about what had been done to Evan. Not think about what Evan thought that might mean for them, for John.

His door chime sounded and he got unsteadily to his feet, carrying the bottle with him.

Rodney nervously waited in front of Sheppard's door. He so wanted to skip going jogging in the middle of the night, he hadn't had some decent sleep ever since he was sleeping alone. And the nightmares didn't make things easier either. Maybe he needed some sleeping pills, he wondered while waiting for Sheppard to reply his call. Maybe the man was asleep already?

Then the door slid open and Sheppard leaned heavily against the door frame. For a moment Rodney wonderd if the other man had fallen asleep on the couch and just woke up. Then Rodney noticed the bottle in Sheppard's hand.

"Um, good evening, Major," he said carefully. "I, um, got your mail."

"McKay," John answered and stepped back from the door. "Come in." He took another long swallow.

Rodney hesitated for a moment as he watched Sheppard take a long swallow - from the bottle. No glass, just swallowing it down. The way Sheppard moved he'd been probably drinking most of the evening.

"Um, okay," Rodney said, and quickly stepped in. It wouldn't do any good if someone saw Sheppard in that state. The room was barely lit, and Rodney couldn't help looking around. There was a poster of Johnny Cash. He pulled a face as he took it in.

John headed for the bed to sit, walking carefully so he didn't weave. He wasn't sure why he cared, really. He turned in time to see Rodney make a face. "What?" he demanded. "You got a problem, McKay?"
