Tim walked into the mess full of nerves and knew it was all because of Ridley Parrish. He'd led teams before and never felt nervous before. Parrish, though, aroused him and made Tim all the more aware of his status as a gay man. Sighing as he went over to a section of the mess that he could rearrange for them, he berated himself over his interest ( Read more... )

Ridley arrived in the mess hall with Tormin skipping along beside him. It took him only a moment of glancing around to spot Miller, Traan, and Kia over in a corner of the mess. He headed that way, Tormin running on ahead. Ridley grinned as Kia jumped Tormin, causing the boy to tumble over, laughing. Athosian children looked after each other-- the oldest looking after the younger ones, but even the children Tormin's age-- those who would be in primary school on Earth-- looked after the toddlers and babies. By the time they reached adolescence, Athosian children had practically all the experience they needed for parenting.

"Be careful, Kia," Ridley said gently as he walked up. "Don't forget Tormin's still hurt." He turned a smile on Miller and Traan. "Hello. Still waiting on Doctor Patel, I see."

Tim was interrupted from saying more to Traan by the appearance of Tormin being tackled by the little girl. The kids were busy and full of energy and he was able to distract himself from Parrish long enough to contain what he knew was an overly interested smile.

Feeling more contained, he turned to Parrish and said, "Hello Parrish. Yeah, we're still waiting, but Patel might have gotten caught up in something. I'm sure she'll be along"

"Oh, yes, I'm sure she will. She strikes me as being usually very prompt." Ridley stuck his hands in his pockets and glanced around. "So I assume once she gets here we'll all get in line and bring our trays to this table." He held up a pad of paper and some coloured pencils. "I brought these for Tormin and Kia so they don't get bored."

Tim knew Patel was very prompt but then again, the science department was a mess with Radek out for the count, but he didn't comment on that. He'd rather not open that can of worms if it could be helped.

Tim said, "Yes, I thought the adults would wait until she got here, but the kids could go ahead and eat if they want or they could just goof around while we talk."

"I'm hungry," Tormin whined at his father.

"Me, too!" Kia yelled.

"I did not get any lunch," Tormin added.

"Well, now, whose fault is that?" his father asked.

Tormin blew out a breath in exasperation. "Mine."

"Exactly. But, we'll go ahead and get you some food," his father promised.

"Yay!" Tormin said and headed off toward the food line.
