Jack smiled as the jumper rose into the air, shooting straight up for a while before he leveled it off and started heading upward at a more oblique angle. Enid colored slightly, and had no intention whatsoever of telling Jackson what she'd truly been thinking.

"It was a foolish thing," she said, shaking her head. "But I was imagining trying to explain to my mother what I do in my work here."

Jack grinned. "Sort of like explaining why a combat-trained US Air Force pilot is involved with 'Deep Space Telemetry.'" Jack had always thought the government could have come up with some other official designation for the stargate program that would have made more sense with the personnel they used. "So is your mother a scientist?"

Enid shook her head. "No, she was a business woman -a marketing administrator for an agricultural firm. I was the first in my family to follow the sciences."

Everyone had thought it a fine thing too, as long as she took time out at some point to marry and raise children. As the years had gone by and this failed to occur, the family approval for her career choice had begun to diminish.

Jack wondered at the use of 'was'-- whether Patel's mother was deceased or merely retired. "So what made you want to be a geek?" he asked.

"Everyone else in my family went into business of some sort or another," Enid shrugged, noting that a second mid oceanic ridge was coming up under them now. "But I have always found business to be... inelegant. One can make sense of science, and even the most astute business person will tell you that there is very little sense to business."
