Traan looked at him and smiled. I would be good to be going out with the other hunters. This was taking him back to his roots. No matter how long he spent in the City of the Ancients he couldn't deny that this was where he belonged. Out in the open air with his fellow Athosians. Hunting as they had done so many times before.

"A hunting party should be for hunters, not those who do not know the way," Belem agreed, "Marran would be most useful for your scientists, to identify plants and herbs."

Belem could smell the air, feel the earth under his shoes, it was a rush of memory.

He turned to Parrish, "Those animal life forms that Jack saw in the jumper, they were north-east of here. We will go in that direction and try to pick them up."

"North-northeast," Ridley corrected automatically. "That means roughly midway between northeast and north." He peered about them. "I've no idea what direction that is, mind you, but that's what Jackson said. A couple of kliks would be... hm... a bit of a walk. In these conditions, probably half an hour or so, I'd guess, maybe more."

"We would not mind the walk," Belem replied, "It has been many days since we were on land, and we'd appreciate the opportunity to walk, even half an hour."

"It would also give us a chance to see what else this land has in store for us."

Hunter had to remind himself that these weren't just 'civilians', and that in a very real sense they had advantages over his own men. The scientists on the other hand, need more babysitting than the hunters. He nodded at Belem and Parrish's words.

"We don't know what those creatures are like, so I don't need to tell you to exercise extreme caution." He smiled. "But I'd like some steak tonight."
