Elizabeth looked up at the sound of footsteps approaching her office... and then looked down as she made adjustments for the stature of her visitor. Guileless eyes gazed directly at her from beneath a mop of dark unruly hair, and his mouth was stained with what she guessed might be berry juice.

"Hello, young man," she said with a smile. "Welcome to my office. Is there something I can do for you this morning?"

Tormin shrugged. "No." Still, he stepped into the room, looking around. "The transporter brought me here."

"I see," said Elizabeth, steepling her fingers over her desk. "Did you mean to have the transporter bring you here," she inquired thoughtfully, "or did you want it to take you somewhere else?"

"I've never been here," Tormin answered, puzzled. "How could I want to come here?"

"Never?" Elizabeth said, rising from her desk to step around and crouch by the lad's side. "So you've never gotten to see the Ring of the Ancestors?"

She had work to do, of course, but Elizabeth decided that the boy's appearance was the perfect excuse for a break, and spending some time with someone who wasn't either exhausted or depressed was just what she needed right now.

"Would you like me to show it to you? Then we can go find your people."
