Not long after leaving the pier, John and Evan arrived at the mess hall. "You look a little peaked," John observed as he sat down and put Evan's share in front of him. He took a bite of his turkey sandwich and then snatched the stylus from Evan's hand. Browsing through files, he swallowed and asked, "So what's up?"

John raised an eyebrow. He hadn't seen Evan in a mood quite like this before, and decided to get to the bottom of it. "Brooding about what, me getting smacked around a little?" He took another bite. "Mmm, tasty. Oh, and pawn to e4."

John blinked a couple of time and a grin slowly spread across his face. "Oh really. I'll have to remember that little tidbit. And what's wrong with Parrish? He seems to actually be getting along with Bates, amazingly enough."

John considered the screen. "Knight f3."

John couldn't help but laugh. "He said that? Wow. It's amazing how far some people have their heads up their asses. Although..." John frowned. "If he starts spreading that sort of thing around, he could start trouble. Knight c3."

"Well, Weir is still giving me orders, and I certainly don't remember staging a coup, so if I've taken over its news to me. I'll take your word about the scientists' side of things, although it may be a good idea to sound out some of the other civilians." John rested his head on his hands. "My experience with working close with civilians is limited to designers and the guys at McMurdo, who, well, were nice people but not normal. Bishop c4."
