Day 6, Morning, Science Lab 1

Jun 03, 2007 12:14

Radek sighed to himself as he settled down in the lab once more to monitor the strange energy spikes he'd been tracking.  Technically, he could have set his notepad computer up to alert him if they changed again, but they had been changing so frequently, he didn't really feel like running back to the lab every five minutes.  So, he would settle in ( Read more... )

Kerry entered the lab with a smile on his face. There was nothing in the world that could bother him after his first coffee. And he still had one donut in hand, nibbling on it as he put his laptop on one of the tables.

"Good morning," he said cheerfully to the other scientist.

He opened his computer and pressed the button to turn it on, then crossed the room to fetch some of cristals he had been working on.

"You've seen that mail about military training?" Kerry asked.

Radek nodded. "Yes, I just responded to Major Sheppard. He had I had been working together, since Dr. McKay will be on his team and he was doing a training session anyway." He looked Kerry over for a moment, trying to remember the man's personnel file. "Have you had any military training before this?"

Kerry's hands froze above his laptop for a second. The moment passed, and he continued to type.

"You could say that."

He connected the cristal to his laptop and put it next to his screen carefully.

"What about you? How much do you know about weapons?"

Radek frowned, turning back toward the laptop to hide his initial reaction. Something about Kerry's response told him there was a story there, but he didn't want to push yet. He knew how it was, having secrets you either couldn't or didn't want to tell anyone else.

"I know enough," Radek said guardedly. "There was compulsory service in my country." That, anyone with a history book could have figured out.

"Right," replied Kerry, feeling suddenly stupid for asking.

He worked in silence for a while. When the silence became too uncomfortable - at least for him - he asked:

"What are you working on?"

Radek smiled. "Oh, simply the same fluctuations I have been tracking since yesterday...well, more accurately since we arrived, but they began to concern me yesterday. I am watching them for a time, as they have started to change again. Very labor intensive, as you see," he joked.

They fell into a silence again. Radek could tell Kerry was beginning to get uncomfortable, so he finally asked, "Where are you from, Dr. Connelly?"

Kerry frowned at the mention of fluctuations. He had noticed some odd phenomenons in the city the past two days, but thought little of it since they barely knew the ancient technology.

Deep in thoughts, he started when Radek's voice broke the silence.

"If you can't tell, I've passed too many years in the states," he joked. "I'm french, and that makes me very stubborn," he added with a smirk.

Radek chuckled. "We should get along well, then...I have been known to be quite stubborn myself." He watched the readings for a moment more, then shook his head. "I am not sure what keeps causing these energy readings to act as they do. Hopefully, Dr. McKay will find them worthy of his attention later." He waved a hand. "Nothing for you to worry about, however, they have not reached critical levels yet."

Trying to make conversation at this point--it was going to be a long morning, otherwise--Radek asked, "So have you had any military experience, yourself?" He saw Kerry's reaction again and turned away from the console. "Believe me, I understand experiences that were less than pleasant. I have been quite suspicious of the military myself since the time I served."

Kerry couldn't help the smile at the word 'suspicious'.

"Ah well, I guess military guys and geeks don't get along anyway. Haven't you noticed that? It's like physical laws, the contrary is impossible."

Kerry leaned back in his chair, thoughtful. He knew he was avoiding talking about his past experience, beating about the bush as usual. He continued in a quiet tone:

"Truth is, I hesitated to join the expedition, but it was too much of a temptation, really. And after all, Doctor Weir is in charge. Well, she is supposed to be," he sighed.

Radek nodded. "Andrei Chekov, the Russian colonel...I met him when we were both much younger, when I was still military. We have been friends since, as unlikely as that sounds...is a long story." He shrugged. "Three times, he tried to get me to sign up. Then he sent Dr. Weir." Radek chuckled to himself. "She makes a very convincing case, and I decided I was able to live with the idea of the military presence as long as the civilian contingent was running the operation." He thought for a long moment. "Very true, the military and the geeks do not get along...polar opposites, I suppose. There are exceptions, of course...hopefully, Atlantis will be one such exception. And I can say this--we will need the self-defense training they provide if we venture off-world. I can support that directive, much as I might hate to use a weapon again."
