Oh my god, this. I have a love/hate relationship with ballet: most times it was fun, but it was so hard for me. Hard because I never wanted to try, because I didn't have the proper body and I always felt uncomfortable. The impression that people give is that nobody wants to see a short ballerina with curves and hips and size D breasts :| And the thing that sucks is even if you do want to dance, if you don't have the body, then you're SOL.
But ha, I know totally know what you're talking about, the clanks of the shoes hitting the floor :)
I saw that controversy a few days ago and was indeed upset by that asshole saying there was nothing wrong with her form, just her body. *headdesk* Just don't get how he doesn't understand that what he said was wrong.
It is where ballet is not feminist that the fairytale becomes real.
This is a fantastic line but I'll have to think about the content of it some more.
As for icons, check out goodstockicons or just do an LJ search for stock icons or ballet icons. You're most likely to find them either in a ballet-specific comm or a stock icons comm. In fact, I just saw a whole bunch of bases here yesterday. Hope this helps!

In some ways they haven't gotten past Balanchine's preferences in the field of ballet and in some ways I believe it has hurt the dance form as a whole. Some companies (NY City Ballet -the company the guy is reviewing- is one of those) that espouse that variety in a company is a spice worth having. The fact of the matter is that the point of view is that Balanchine's lines are the only choreography worth doing (the style that most current big companies are descended from

ack he=the critic. Lines=a style of positions that are used in things such as an arabesque (where the leg is held out straight, some lines require you to life your hip to achieve them while others want you to leave your hip down and level)
