Divergence

It had been a busy evening for Kal-El.  After turning back time so the Zod Squad never caused the world such devastation he flew up past the Moon and picked up the Phantom Zone crystal before heading back to Earth.  He carefully placed the crystal it in a special force field within the Fortress, added a Kryptonian password to the security measures and zoomed back to his apartment for the evening.  He poured himself a steaming cup of coffee but barely noticed as he accidentally overtopped the mug.

“Darn!” Kal-El blurted out as he dabbed the hot coffee off the counter.  Shaking his head slightly at his actual rather than perceived clumsiness he forced his mind back to the task at hand.  With the counter finally clear he relaxed onto his couch and took off his glasses, placing them topside down on the coffee table.     Kal-El released a deep sigh and then let his head lightly drop onto the couch back.   ‘How did Lois figure it out besides my stance?’ he thought, ‘I’m going to have to be extra vigilant and try to talk her out of her “Superman infatuation” the problem is how to do it?’  It wasn’t that he didn’t exactly want her to figure out who he was; it was just that the last time he let himself get carried away he found himself on the receiving end of a beating.  Something he had never had in his entire lifetime.  Then on top of it he let out the worst of dregs of Kryptonian history.  If he hadn’t been able to turn back history like he had not only might history have looked at Krypton in a different light but also possibly painted him with the same brush.

‘Does Lois love me for more than my powers?’ Kal-El thought ruefully.  ‘She doesn’t really care for me as Clark Kent and while Clark is definitely an act at the office there’s still a part of who I am within that act which I never can show as Superman.  I love making Lois laugh at the office.  I love being able to bring in articles which also make as much of a difference, if not more, than being Superman.  I just wish Lois could love me more for the “Clark Kent” aspects of myself than the “Superman” ones.’

Kal-El sighed once again and picked up his glasses before moving to the bedroom, ‘Maybe a good night’s rest might give me a better perspective.’  However as he drifted off to sleep Kal-El dreamed of Lois, her soft black hair spread against silver sheets with her head thrown back in ecstasy.
