SNOW DAY

Jan 15, 2007 21:30

Well, due to "ice pellets", it appears that school is cancelled for tomorrow (and possibly wednesday too). All this for "ice accumulation less than a quarter of an inch." I think that it's pretty funny considering that nowhere where I worked or went to school in the past 8 years would have even blinked an eye at that sort of weather. We would ( Read more... )

This is a classic example of Texans on Ice.

Basically, Texans aren't taught how to drive on ice - not in driver's ed, not by our parents, not by our significant others on the rare occasion there's ice. Therefore, nobody knows how - physically - to drive.

To complicate matters, Texas cities have bigger worries for 9/10ths of the year than to buy sanders - for the amount of money they cost in initial cost, manning them, training people, and storage, the cost of having the city shut down is less. Secondly, we have a lot more crazy-high bridges than any place north of the Mason-Dixon line. No clover-leafs here, it's all massive bridges. Finally, some of our roadways are almost entirely off the ground (183, several portions of the tollroad, I-35 upper deck, etc).

In short, even you have a very, very good reason to stay inside. Other drivers being incompetent, the city being unable to thoroughly make safe the roads, and the inherent road construction all contribute to a very, very dangerous situation.

We just have a tiny amount of freezing rain. The roads aren't even bad and they closed the university today. I ton of businesses closed down too. It looks like the university is going to open tomorrow at noon, but they also left open the possibility of changing their minds.

Oh, I just added Doppelganger to my Amazon wishlist recently. It looks very promising!

It's pretty good. Unfortunately, after reading such a eloquent writer as Carey, reading someone's first book was a little jarring, but Marie got into the style and it's really becoming quite good. Just the sort of book I like: no clear good guy/bad guy (yet), some intrigue that's not overwhelming, and strong female characters. After years of seeing her at VeriCon in Harvard, I'm really glad that she got published. :)
