Religion and veganism

Recently The Daily Show's "Trendspotting" guy had this to say about choosing wines:

(paraphrasing)
If you're having chicken, you are to have white wine.
If you're having steak, you are to have red wine.
If you're vegan... you're annoying!

It's interesting that this sort of thing is perfectly acceptable on mainstream television, whereas saying "If you're Christian/Muslim/Jewish/Hindu... you're annoying!" would get you in serious trouble. Even on a comedy show.

I guess it's not acceptable to put down people who have beliefs based on ridiculous mythologies from an ignorant tribal past. However, if you target vegans, whose belief that causing unnecessary suffering is something to be avoided, well that's just fine.

Why the f*ck does religion get more respect than a philosophy of minimizing suffering?!
