Sir James was rather surprised at this comment. "As long as it takes, my Lord," he said. "I had him once. I'm not going to let him slip through my grasp again."

He did wonder what had possessed him to bring the Chief Justice along. Perhaps he felt he needed the company - but then again, he always *did* work better on his own. No, come to think of it, it was probably as a precaution.

Or a decision made in the midst of a crisis.

Lord Exmouth sighed inwardly at that. We could be chasing him for *years*, then, damnit!

"Let me put this another way, Sir James, from the point of view of someone whose honour has not yet been slighted," he said finally. "We have not seen another dwelling this past day, and I'm pretty sure we have passed beyond the borders of Smallbridge by now. We have limited supplies." He paused. "In short, my tenacious friend, we cannot possibly keep chasing this outlaw forever. Besides," he added with a wry grin, "it will do Smallbridge no good at all, if her two most prominent citizens are caught as outlaws by this county's sherrifs."

"It will do Smallbridge no good either, if her sherriff cannot hold on to an outlaw he had in his grasp," Sir James countered. "It is more than just honor at stake here, my Lord."

After all, he was proof that His Majesty was more than capable of replacing officials at the mere suggestion of trouble.

Lord Exmouth's comments about other sherrifs startled him a little, and he quickly glanced around. Not that there was anything to be seen, beyond the light of the small fire. But one should be cautious. Still...
"If we were to be caught," he said, "they would - no, should have done so by now." He snorted. "Amateurs."

Sir Edward was beginning to suspect that they had somehow stumbled upon an area of Helsa that was unoccupied. How that was possible - when pretty much all of the world had been mapped and documented several times over - he could not even imagine ( ... )
