Marlowe looked at Psmith, then at the swarthy dead guy in the tub, then back at Psmith. "Looks like a tight fit." He thought for a moment. "Any idea what killed him?" No reply. He took Psmith's walking stick and poked the corpse above the ear. The dead man's head lolled over to the side at a sickening angle.

"Neck busted?" Foley offered.

"Perhaps he snapped it whilst trying to navigate that tricky hitch where the pipe to the shower-head doubles back upon itself."

"Should we call cops? Don't like to." Foley scratched the back of his head glumly. "Nosy. Ask questions, expect answers. 'Found stiff in tub, no clues' not good enough. Third degree, four hours." The relative prolixity of the paragraph left him even glummer.

"Yeah, I guess we'll wait a bit before we report it. Dick, interview the clerk. Be as vague as possible, and if they press for details imply that something was stolen. Maybe we can find the killer before word gets out. Psmith, check the roof."

"Yes, sir." Psmith had been told twice now, and that was enough. He saluted smartly, gave the shower-head one last curious look, and headed out.

Dick made a cursory attempt to double-check that the window was latched, but he couldn't reach it without climbing up into the tub. Marlowe did that, and they locked everything securely behind them as they left to do their investigations.
