"Really? You're entirely serious?" Fred asked, astounded. She couldn't believe that after all THAT, she'd actually gotten the job. What job had she gotten? She'd failed to ask that, and Dr. House had failed to tell her.
"It's great. What exactly will I be doing?" she asked, trying to sound as positive as possible.

Neil watched them uncomfortably from the kitchen archway. It wasn't that he was evesdropping on their conversation, it was more of a self-preservation tactic. If he stood there making his presence known without entering he'd at least know what was going on, or if he was in trouble. He got the unfortunate feeling that House hadn't been all too pleased with his move of letting this strange woman in his house.

He folded his arms across his chest, wrinkling the freshly ironed white collared shirt as he watched the proceedings. Seemed like the woman was getting a job and that was really all he needed to know. Neil pushed himself off the doorframe and entered the kitchen fully, opening the refridgerator and pulling out the gallon of milk. He rummaged around for a cup and poured himself a glass.

House would call him when needed or he could come and find him.

"I'm entirely and completely serious," House said in a mocking tone that he doubted she picked up on it.

Rubbing his leg, House felt the pain slowly return. He'd stopped carrying his Vicodin, yet he only used the morphine to sleep through the night. House didn't bother to get up, or even find a phone. He bellowed, "Hey, KID. C'mon!"

House turned his attention back to Fred. "We need you to treat the clinic patients. I'd deal with the consults and referrals. I need a... people person."

"Treat the patients? How would I do that? Dispense medicine or talk to people? A...people person?" she questioned, back into her mode of complete rambling. "I suppose I could be a people person." Fred was thrilled at the prospect of doing SOMETHING. Sitting around lazily was NOT her thing... " Who were you calling to?" she asked, curiously.

It was quiet on the Canadian street, and as he had felt since he'd arrived here this morning, Robert Chase was rather uncomfortable. The crisp, clean, dainty peacefullness of Aternaville was nothing like his native Australia, and even less like his New Jersey home ( ... )

Fred didn't answer right away. House let the silence linger, enjoy it. There's when the knock came. Like House would get up. "Damn it Neil, you don't have to knock!"

Neil? Who the hell?

Chase frowned. He cleared his throat a little and spoke loudly at the door "House? It's um... it's me, Dr. Chase."

You've Gotta be...

Shock? Yes, that definitely summed it up. No maybe confusion and anger. Annoyance? Hell, House didn't really know what to think, he only felt his eyes widen and his head spin with thousands of questions. And not his normal, off-the-rocker question. He had hard pressing ones, like: How did you find us? Why are you here? When are you leaving? Did Cuddy send you? Are you alone?

Well, on the bitter side (House didn't know what that meant, but folks told him to look on it all the time), out of the three ducklings House only wanted to see Chase. After what happened, well. He didn't want to see Cameron or Foreman again. Ever.

Without stopping to decide against it, Chase took the advice intended for 'Neil.' He turned the knob and pushed the door open. He peaked inside and there was House, looking several years younger than the last time he'd seen him. There was also a thin, brunette woman, probably around Chase's own age, maybe a few years older.

For the second time in five minutes, Chase felt a 'What the hell?' bubbling in his brain. "Erm... hi. I... just came to..." Chase sighed, suddenly feeling completely stupid under House's expectant glare. Finally, he manages lamely, "How are things?"

"How are things?"

House asked, with his normal puzzled expression. "You flew nearly four hours on a plane, and then took an hour drive to pop in and say 'How are thing'? Who the hell did you kill now? God, please say Foreman."

Chase had to smirk. There was the House he'd missed. The House he hadn't heard from since before the shooting. The House he'd traveled those five hours in hopes of finding. "No. Kind of wish that myself. That's partly why I'm here." He hesitated. "The hospital hasn't been... a very pleasent working enviornment since you and Wilson left."

House completely bought that, and thought it was a load of shit in one swoop. The hospital would bore anyone without Wilson and he keeping the gossip mill fresh and giving everyone headaches with their crazy antics. Cuddy was probably bored out of her mind.

Still, Chase lied. And lied badly. Did House teach him anything? House always thought Chase *had* learned the most. "That's sweet. I mean shred a tear. Now, why are you *really* here?"
