Spike didn't know how to deal with it. After the mess in LA and the indeterminable time on the run, he was certain that the only bits of his old life that would follow him would be the bad parts. The Senior Partners would find him and finish what they started. The First would have gathered its strength and come after him again now that he was weak. Hell, he wasn't even all that surprised to find out that Xander Harris was in the neighborhood, probably intent on mocking him into full-blown insanity.

But... Buffy? No one had told him. He was sure that the presence of a vampire Slayer should have been mentioned once everyone knew they had a new vamp in town. Out of decency, at least.

But Spike couldn't worry about that now. Not only was she in town and aware that he was no longer dead, but she was on this very floor. Nothing else matter but making the short journey to the room just a few doors over and seeing her before someone told her things she shouldn't know about him. Who knows who else from his past managed to find their way ( ... )

Even after she gave him permission to touch her, Spike found that he couldn't. He'd fallen for enough smoke and mirrors recently, and doing anything to shatter this illusion would probably shatter him a little, too. It was with that thought in mind that he flinched as she raised her hand to touch him ( ... )

Her heart ached when she had seen him flinch. It made her wonder just how many times he imagined seeing her and found he was only dreaming. The Slayer understood that feeling all too well and she wanted to shield him from any amount of pain ever again ( ... )
